But, my god, I'm so sick of working retail. Especially grocery store retail.

But it's difficult to find actual full time jobs these days. Especially ones with benefits. Good ones at that.

But I make nowhere near enough money.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, I swear.

I've definitely been considering going to school to learn some trades. I'd love to learn some good practical skills.

This, so much

The skilled labor gap is awful and it's only getting bigger. When I needed another tech I ended up paying someone to move here from an hour and a half away because after two months I still couldn't find anyone experienced or even with enough ambition to train.

Skilled labor is great and has good job security.

I also recommend against trucking, unless the truckers do something that job could easily be gone in the next 10 years.

Maybe over the road, but not the oil field jobs.
The over the road people don't start making good money until you have a few years of experience anyway.

You think? I worked 12 hour night shifts in a factory and it got old fast. I also worked in retail and loved it. Needless to say the job in retail lasted the longest. It's strange that I generally don't like people and find them boring yet when dealing with most customers I found myself enjoying it. It's probably because they needed my help and it made me feel good knowing that.

I think it depends on the company you work for or the work you do. I've worked for a couple of manufacturing companies - never on the floor myself - but I knew all the guys down there.

One guy I worked with did finish work on the products, basically cleaning them up, making sure the parts fit correctly, that kinda stuff. Kind of like a non-engineering version of quality control. Anyway, dude basically just chilled listening to Metallica (not my first choice) and shit while he relaxed and worked. He just did his thing and nobody bugged him. It was a super chill gig for him.

Conversely, at the same company, they always had to bring in temps for the buffing machine because it was such a pain in the ass to work with. The room was hot, they had to dress down in what basically amounts to hazmat suits to do the job, and it had the added benefit of possible breaking your bones if you fucked up. That was not bueno.

As long as you're okay with monotony and your boss lets you listen to books, radio, whatever then it's fine.

Must have worked at a better retailer than I did. After working retail for part of hs and college, I was more than motivated to try for real work so I would never wind up there again. Granted, I briefly worked at a rental place which wasn't so bad, but Netflix basically killed that industry and it's not like it paid well anyway or had prospects.

Ok, it can be done though you need to heavily consider some things.

- How long can you live (financially) without a job
- Do you have a backup plan (Another job, business idea ect)

If you can manage for a couple of months without an income you can focus on getting a new job in that time, if it is longer you could retrain like a post above has said.

Your other option is look at alternatives like starting your own business, look into streaming (Youtube, twitch, ect) or app development.

I've always trusted my gut on things like this

About a decade ago I had a job at an outgoing call center that conducted surveys and I absolutely hated it. I decided I couldn't take it anymore and just decided to not show up one day and look for a better job instead. I was interviewed and hired at a better job with better pay within two hours or so.

If you want to leave badly enough, call in sick and sign up with some temp agencies. They won't pay great, but they'll find you work right away. If one doesn't get you working within a week, go sign up at another one. If you don't like the place they send you to, ask to go to another one. Temp agencies don't pay well, but you can use them to shop around for jobs, and most places that have used the agencies for a while don't have particularly high expectations for temps (because a lot of them are awful people)

Yeah I'm not looking to leave like RIGHT away, in fact I was pretty content with my job up until about two months ago, but I've really had my eyes open to how bad this is and how much I DON'T want to do this forever.

I just don't want to be hasty either. Like I said, it's tough finding legit full time jobs out there, especially ones with benefits. But it would be nice to learn some trades or something for when I'm really fed up with this lol.

My problem has always been not knowing what I want to do.

I'm tired of hauling stuff around and bumping into customers all day, but I also don't want to be stuck sitting on my ass at a desk all day.

Anyone know of any kinds of jobs with a happy medium? lol like some desk work, some walking around?

I'm service manager and that's what I do all day. Bunch of phone calls and paperwork in between walking out in the shop, talking to customers, pulling needed tires, etc. Sometimes I even get out to smooze with the house accounts to make sure they're happy.

Yeah as I've said before, I'm absolutely not going to just up and quit until either I can find another job, or get some kind of education that will lead to something better.

I think one of my problems is that I'm kind of picky. I know I want something with morning shifts (like 8-4 or something) and I know I don't want it to be too far (no more than half an hour away) and I'd love to have two days off.

There's more to life than working. I've never been one to define myself by my career. I just want something that'll pay the bills so I can live comfortably and still have money to buy "wants" rather than just "needs".

Read the topic before you post something that proves that you're stupid. Over the road drivers will be replaced, oil field drivers will never be replaced for multiple reasons. Over the road drivers make shit money until their 2nd or 3rd year anyway.

Bro-fist!

It all comes down to one big issue for me: I don't want to give up the benefits.

I absolutely hate how healthcare is handled in this country. It's inexcusable how expensive it is. I shouldn't have to worry about sticking with a shitty job just to have health coverage.
