After playing through Sword again and Secret fully for the first time, I now want to replay the final of the trilogy of sorts.

Followed some suggestions from previous topics and Sin of Mana at a lower than the default difficulty sounds like a good way to play.

I really feel like trying out Duran's shields, but not use him as my main char. (Partly because of Sin and partly because he is probably the character I have used the most as my main)

Been a long time since I played, so apologies if I messed up on any of the character names...

Karly: Flail Healer
Kevin: Fist Brawler
Riesz: Lance Fighter

Minor spoilers
your main char determines the final set of dungeons/bosses and the difficulty of them, Angela/Duran is medium, Kevin/Carlie is easy and Hawk/Riesz is Hard

With this in mind i would pick hawk or Riesz as your main char, both are very useful with hawk getting either useful support magic or strong debuffs depending on his class choice while Riesz gets Stat buffers or stat debuffers depending on her class choice

one of those with duran will leave you short a healer nromally however you said you want to try shields which means making duran a light class (Knight) which gives him heal light, especially if you make him a Lord so he can target all allies with it

for your final party member i would reccomend Carlie since she can go down the Light path to learn heal light and some useful saber spells, or the dark path for powerful debuffs like black rain and demon breath

If you dont want the harder final path then simply pick duran or carlie as your main char for the preferred difficulty

I know about the paths and the like. I have actually played through 3 before completely, I have also done all prologues, of that much I am certain.

In one of my earlier topics, when I first said I was doing this, someone here mentioned Sin of Mana, it is very far along, it just needs to update 1 final boss before it is at V1 Dragon Lord, which I assume is Duran/Angela's, hence SoM as a reason for why I do not want to use Duran as my main, or Angela by extension

Also, I would like that people do respond if they go with the do not use Duran option, as while it was mostly a joke option, explanations are always appreciated.

Let me rephrase everything then, I have played all the characters before, a long time ago. During a time when I was not yet that good at games, but knew how to make a gamegenie or the like work.

As such, I've never "properly" played the game and as such I am asking for hints towards the intricacies of the game.

For example, reading through the guides, would Necromancer Karly be a good introduction to the support spells?

Necromancer is a good class, yes. Black curse is one of the best spells to use against bosses, as it lowers pretty much all of their stats. Carlie is also the best healer by far, so yes she is recommended for begginers.

I think I prefer her Evil Shaman class though. Demon Breath deals good damage to enemies, and she gets a neat summon demon spell, if I remember correctly.

Right then, how would Light Angela, Dark Karly (debuffs) and Light Durlan (Shields) sound?

Do those make sense together, or should I exchange Angela for someone else?

Angela's light clases are great. I have only used the Grand Divina, but the Archmage is almost the same, as far as I know. She is the best user of elemental magic.

It is a good team. If you are feeling doubts about Angela, though, you can just switch her for Kevin. It would be trading magic damage for physical, and the guy hits like a truck.

And in most games like this it's always helpful to have a healer.

So I guess Karly as main char, as Angela/Duran is the same route and SinoM...

Anyone a good substitute for Angela as a caster, or perhaps a more physical party can be viable?

Karly and Duran are set for now, Shields and debuffs is the things I really want to try out, especially since apparently Sin fixes a lot of the bugs, including the shield bugs.

Anything I should know about the levelling system? I remember picking a single stat at each level-up, is it possible to completely mess that up?

Playing with Karly now as my main. Did Angela and Duran's prologues as a refresher of sorts, seems Karly skips a part of the prologue?

Time seems to really advance haphazardly, whenever the game feels like it...
So, it has definitely grown darker, but no fairy to be found yet at the lake... (One of the few things I do remember...)

It feels like the game is mocking my limited colour-sight and I am not appreciating it.

all you need to know about levelling is certain stats improve certain things like cast time and effectiveness/damage of spells. Carlie mostly wants spirit though vitality can help fr survivability too. angela is the same with intelligence instead of spirit and duran wants Attack and Vitality with potentially a bit into spirit later for heal light (assuming you want him as a light class)

for class changes the levels are 18 and 38 (iirc) first one is free at any mana stone (by that level it will likely be water or fire, though some like to go extreme and get there before the wind crystal) while the second one requires sspecific items for each class which you get from special seeds dropped from enemies in the final area (which would be for you with carlie, the jungle of illusion/mirage palace) then you have to return to the mana goddess statue in the holyland

If you haven't, check out the Hardtype patch on InsaneDifficulty. It retunes classes, you change earlier, all equipment has special bonuses, and you can choose the difficulty rating.

The only issue is having a tab open to reference what equipment does, due to text limitations ingame.

That is what Sin of Mana is. ID's forum only goes up to version .900, but also links to another site that actually went up to .925.
