My friends and I always associated nerds as being more on the "theoretical" side with an emphasis on things like reading, tabletops, and videogames and geeks being more on the "physical" side with emphasis on technology, comic books, and conventions.

For most of my life, nerds were the really smart people with poor social skills, while geeks were the sorts of people obsessed with entertainment or pop culture with poor social skills.

So if you're hugely into math or rocket science, you're a nerd. If you're into comic books or Doctor Who or D&D, you're a geek.

Then stupid people got the two confused and ruined everything.
