Their music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to them to even remotely understand them. I remember listening to a song on Lateralus (though I can't remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Tool could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.

Another thing you should note about Tool is that it's easy to get a headache listening to them. Not because they're a bad band, but because of how many ideas their music is riddled with and how complex they are. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.

If you don't like the music, you'll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.

also remember, they don't release new albums for 5+ years, and refuse to talk about a new album.

Some bands have that style, where if you listen to it at "face value" it sounds like whatever but if you take the time to pay close attention to it all, it sounds amazing. In fact, a lot of layered, technically complex music has that kinda thing. Im not saying you need to go out and plunk 100+ on a pair of headphones, but some music just isnt the same on cheaper pairs.

My reply was sincere. Ive never listened to tool, but there are bands out there that dont sound like much at "face value" but put on a good set of headphones(again not 100+ dollars but not 5 dollar earbuds either) and you can hear everything.

Take this song for example:

From 3:35 onward is some crazy drumming, but if you arent listening intently you might not hear it and realize its beauty. Or maybe that was just me and im talking out of my ass.

Footnote: I think tool is pretty decent. Not my favorite but they have good stuff

I like Tool, but they do have some pretentious fans, which is why this copypasta is funny to me.


Also they put way too much filler on their albums and Adam Jones writes simple guitar riffs for a "progressive" band

That's the problem I've always had with them too. As a big fan of prog, his guitar work has always been pretty underwhelming for me

I went to see Fantomas open for Tool some years ago, and was stoked for Fantomas. During their entire set the Tool fans in the audience jeered and made comments about how weird and noisy Fantomas were. Completely killed my enthusiasm. I left like three songs into Tool's set because I was disgusted (and surprised) at how close-minded the fans were for being enthusiasts of a progressive band.
