Anyway make friends with a mechanic and don't go to dealerships. There are definitely dishonest ones out there.

There's always something that needs change, oil need change, brakes needs change, plug thingies in the engine needs change, wipers needs change, tires needs change and on and on and on...

If you'd bother to make any modicum of effort to know what cars are, you probably wouldn't have this problem.

It seriously takes very little knowledge to know when you're being screwed.

My dad's a mechanic, and yeah, they upsell often because most don't get paid salary. Mechanics don't really make all that much, considering they get paid by book hours based on the job they're doing, and those book hours frequently pay less than the actual time spent working. Like getting paid .2 hours for an oil change that takes half an hour.

As for the flak they get for upselling, it's ultimately up to you whether or not you want the work done. Just don't get mad when a mechanic suggests something, you turn it down, and then all hell breaks loose later on.

It's a shitty job. I challenge you to find a mechanic over the age of 35 that loves what they do.

Smarkil isn't wrong though. Having a general idea of the ins and outs of a vehicle should be sufficient. You don't even need to know how to do the stuff, just knowing what the usual cost can help avoid spending too much. Worse comes to worse, you can just get quotes from different places before accepting a major fix.

99% of cars and light trucks are fundamentally the same. The specs vary but it's all the same stuff.

It's just like computers. Just a matter of taking the time to learn what the parts are and how they work together. From there with patience, mindfulness and a good service manual you can do most routine work yourself easily. Never pay for shit like oil changes or changing break pads. That's a rippoff. Save your mechanics visits for when shits truly borked.

Oil changes aren't really ripoffs. Oil alone is at least $15-16, and the oil filter is another $4-5. When you find oil change services for $20, you're basically getting free labor.
