New Mexico > Maine > Colorado >>>>>>> every other state on that list other than... >>>>>>> North Dakota = South Dakota

None of these would be in my top 5 picks, even top 10 I'm not sure.

I've lived in Colorado. They have a pretty decent cost-of-living.

I've visited every one of these states. Out of those choices, I'd say:

MT > WY > ID > CO > UT > NM > ME > ND > SD > NE

Only reason CO isn't higher is because I've already lived there. Would like to live somewhere new. ME isn't higher because I've been there a ton since I live an hour or so away.

I don't know enough about these states to have a preference so just voted North Dakota because I like the name. Personally I'd rather stay in England than actually live in the USA though.

Well, I wanted to move to Cabot Cove, Maine but the murder rate there is insane for a town of that size. It seems like once a week somebody was getting killed.

In more seriousness, probably Colorado because I learned that Longmire -- which was set in Wyoming -- was actually filmed in Colorado and it's a pretty beautiful state. I guess New Mexico also ranks up there. Granted, I still like the idea of living in Maine.

For whatever reason, as a kid I always wanted to live in Montana but I can't imagine any real reason to as an adult. Utah is probably nice, but I heard that Salt Lake City isn't a real place and is instead a metaphor for paradise plus, you know, there are more Mormons than you could shake a book at.

Utah no question. Salt Lake City is incredible and my favorite US city I've visited, Park City has Sundance, best skiing in the world, tons of ridiculously awesome national parks like Arches and Moab, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon etc. It really isn't close.

It's warm and dry. Good food. Pretty affordable. Northern NM is more mountainous, which I like. If I were to move there, I'd probably go for Santa Fe or Taos area. They have a huge hot air balloon festival near Las Cruces every year, which is fun to see at least once.

I would totally live in Maine if they had even a little bit of a tech presence. As it stands it would be almost impossible to find a job in my career there.

Maybe when I retire I can become one of those old people who runs a Bed & Breakfast out of a giant 150 year old house.

1) Not a state.

2) If you've ever seen most of the neighbors that are actually in Washington DC, you'd never, ever want to live in any of them.

3) DC's statistics are skewed as fuck anyway due to politicians and the political support structure versus the rest of the actual civilian population. Basically, if you don't work in the government/public sector, you probably don't want to live there.

It is easy to have massive pay increases when you are the ones deciding if you should get them.

But yea, DC is a shit hole. The only place in the entire...whatever it is that is actually halfway decent is the area where the monuments are. Even the Whitehouse is basically a patch of green in a giant slum.

I mean, a lot of those states don't really have all of those things. And those are more reasons to visit a state than to live in it. Sure, Utah has nice national parks, but it has some dumb laws and culture.

If you aren't going to school or have kids in school, it hardly matters. And American public schools generally suck.
