2 direct family members have been diagnosed with Coeliac disease now. So my chances for it are significantly higher than the average person.

Think I need to do an elimination diet soon to rule things out. And I just stocked up on so many delicious noodles :(

but I will go see a doctor for blood tests before changing diet as a clean diet will make testing tougher.

That sucks, but gluten-free options are insanely better than they used to be. Basically indistinguishable for a lot of things. Not too sure about noodles though.

Well it can be bad or asymptomatic. but it will always impact health and leave you at greater risk for other conditions.

A coeliac/celiac person will react to gluten--it's an autoimmune disorder that causes damage to the digestive system when gluten is consumed. Over time that can mean severely damaged intestines that don;t allow you to properly absorb nutrients from food. there are a lot of symptoms, though most people with the disorder don't report symptoms or assume that how they feel is normal.

Gluten is a protein found in some grains like wheat, rye, and barley. It's also used in a LOT of other things that you may not realize--anything with hydrolized vegetable protein (like soy sauce), maltodextrin, even caramel color can contain gluten. :(

The only way to manage Coeliac is a 100% gluten-free diet. that means reading the labels on every single thing consumed. Not eating at a lot of restaurants as even tiny crumbs can cause issues. there are no cheat days.

I get some bloating from some foods, not much else. Pasta especially. Most Coeliac sufferers are asymptomatic anyway.

My family members are in their late 20s and mid 50s, I'm 30.

Soooooo much yeah. My (adoptive) grandmother was coeliac, and type 1 diabetic. she was really limited with her foods. If only she got to live in this GF and alternative sweetener heyday, she would have loved it.

That would also suck! i love tofu and soy milk. :(

I am also def lactose intolerant so that might influence my enjoyment of soy.

So I was looking at my genetic testing information that was done before. I have the haplotype common for coeliac :(

DQ2 represents the second highest risk factor for coeliac disease, the highest risk is a close family member with disease. Due to its link to coeliac disease, DQ2 has the highest association of any HLA serotype with autoimmune disease, close to 95% of all coeliacs have DQ2, of that 30% have 2 copies of DQ2. Of the DQ2 homozygotes who eat wheat, lifelong risk is between 20 and 40% for coeliac disease.

Yep better go get tested

Well with celiac you can't just eat wheat, it's killing your insides. Thankfully gluten-free bread has come a long way and is pretty available (though not convenient). I have a bread machine and will make my own if I really need to.

Lactose intolerant you can take supplements to eat dairy for a period of time without having the discomfort. I just don't really like dairy so I don't do that often.

Mostly I love pasta, and soy sauce. and will be sad without it.

Have to call the doctor again tomorrow to try and get testing booked. Even if I'm not celiac now there's a good chance I will develop it in time. It fits some annoying symptoms I've had for a while so who knows. It will be interesting to find out.

If the blood work hints to it I'll still need an endoscopy and biopsy to diagnose it yaaaaay

Endoscopy is one of the worst things at the hospital. Especially the one they shove down the throat all the way to the stomach. It's horrible.

That one procedure is called Esophagogastroduodenoscopy. It's kinda hard to pronounce so I just call it gastroscopy.

Haha dude my adoptive family is a variant spelling of Monroe and I know two matriarchs with the surname that are coeliac. I guess 3 if you count my cousin's wife.

But the irony is I'm not related to them biologically, they're not related to each other by blood, and genetics are the biggest risk factor for the disease. They all married into the name.

What a weird coincidence

Got the blood test requisition form, going to eat some pasta and bread tonight and get blood done tomorrow.

Doctor suggested going completely gluten free for a week and then binging on bread /noodles / gluten things for a meal. Says if I have family with it and that bothers me I am probably coeliac

Hahaha you poor thing. And your son. I'm lactose intolerant so I've stopped with dairy.

Well my bloodwork came back with extremely low B12 (beyond deficient and cause for immediate concern I guess) despite trying to have more meat and eggs. Have to follow up with a doctor this week. I think I can safely give the animal products up and just supplement B12 with megadosing since I can't properly absorb it in an omnivorous diet.

They didn't say anything about the tests for coeliac, and B12 absorption issues are very common with coeliac. The blood tests aren't conclusive anyway. So I may have to push to get an endoscopy. Bah.

With the doctor's blessing I'm going to be going gluten-free and vegan oh boy

I don't blame you, Cold Stone is good.

But since dairy doesn't sit well there are some really good dairy-free ice cream options. ben & Jerry's new vegan ice cream is dairy free and made with almond milk (and coconut oil it seems). The PB & Cookie is probably my favorite flavor of theirs out of all the regular & vegan options. And no distress!

Out here in Alberta where it's cattle country vegetarian is a dirty word. Vegan, well, you just don't utter the phrase. And I'm in a small town where many restaurants have one vegetarian option if that. So no more food out for me. Unless I visit Edmonton, and a few of the vegan restaurants are already my favorites so more reason to visit 'em!

I'm just honestly really kind of tired of eating animal products and I can't reconcile eating them vs. supporting animal welfare or the environment. If having that in my diet means I'm still B12 deficient, screw it, supplements work.

Ugh. If you can do that then more power. I'm not sure I wouldn't take a short drop and a sudden stop if I had to do that.

It'll be a transition but not the end of the world. At least it's farming season and fresh produce is available. Come winter this might be a lot harder.
