A boy in his class named Kevin. My mom told him it wasnt a crush. Boys dont get crushes on other boys. He was just a friend.

My nephew told her his mom told him boys could have crushes on other boys. I was trying not to laugh at how uncomfortable my mom was. Plus in case it is a crush I dont want him to feel it is something bad or to be embarrassed about, but it was so very hard not to.

Well at that age I actually kissed gals and had "gfs" so one would assume I had a "crush" on them. Meaning if a guy can have a crush on a gal at the age of 6 I don't see why he can't have a crush on a guy. None of it actually means anything at that age anyway.

He doesnt actually know what crush means. So it might be a crush idk. I had crushes at that age. He heard a song called girl crush or something and his mom admitted she didnt really know how to explain it other than liking someone a lot. So it could iust be that kevin is his best friend. Or it could be a crush. Idk. But either way my moms reaction was priceless.

"You cant have a crush on a boy"
"My mom said boys could have crushes on other boys"
Me trying not to laugh" he is right mom, there are lots of boys with crushes on other boys"
Mom glares at me "hes 5"
Nephew chimes in "im 6"

Everyone has crushes as a kid, and as someone who had to deal with the confusion of being told as a child that you cant like guys, I can say that your mom has some stuff to learn about parenting. Kudos to that kid's mom for not shutting him down and inevitably making him feel like shit later in life.

I definitely had crushes when I was 6 years old. They were mostly male crushes but I tried to force myself to have female crushes since that's the norm and all. I'm glad he's open about it at 6 years old, I was too afraid to tell anyone at that time haha

Ah. Well perhaps he's using the word incorrectly then. Even more so given the explanation he was given as that could apply to anyone your nephew "likes a lot" even if it's just in a friend way or even family. It's not always easy to explain adult things to kids but kids are indeed very inquisitive. My nephew(7) asks a lot of questions too.

Are you suggesting that the cognitive dissonance that makes being gay extremely uncomfortable for many people doesn't start with how their parents treat the idea when they're very young?

Probably a little at least. She knows I have gay friends and I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm gay. So she does her best not to talk about the subject, but she is very uncomfortable when it comes up and tends to stick to more traditional trains of thought.

Unfortunate, but it could be worse. She could've disowned you

Try being gay and growing up in an environment like that. It is nothing short of child abuse. Dont discount the pain I went through as me being "dramatic". I would never wish that kind of upbringing on anyone.

I'm with balor here. I was always afraid to say things about how I felt about this kind of stuff. Some families are rough on gays, and if you didn't go through it you might not appreciate how sad and hard it is.

Honestly, I kind of wish she would have. I appreciate her, she has done a lot for me and continues to do a lot, but ehhh it's complicated. Things would be a lot less complicated if I had a definitive reason to just not talk to her anymore.

I get it. It's why I tried so hard not to laugh, I didn't want my nephew to think I was laughing at him. Stuff you are taught in your childhood are hard to overcome especially when they are taught to you by someone you really look up to. Getting taught that how you feel and who you are is wrong or not normal as a child certainly can make those teenage and early adult years that much worse.

She is pretty confident he is not gay, just that he is misunderstanding the concept and she is basing that with how he interacts with girls his age. According to her he is quite popular with the girls.

That said she has also openly admitted to not liking the idea of having a gay son. So her views on how he interacts with fellow children may be a bit bias.

A lot of folk have shitty upbringing. It's not pleasant and in a ideal world nobody would experience that type of shit. However past is past, it happened and thus you deal with it and move on the best you can. You can't change the past. All you can do is learn from it, make changes now that will create your future. It'll even help you become a better parent one day if you even have kids and prevent the bad things that happened to you as a kid from happening to them. I think most folk learn from their parents mistakes when they come from 'broken homes'.

Still one thing that I find the most irksome is when grown adults blame their shitty life on what happened years ago when they were children. I'm not saying that point in their life wasn't terrible and could even be very traumatic but what I am saying is when you're old enough to make your own choices and live your own life you should take some responsibility, stop being a baby and take control of your life. The past can't be changed and shitty parents will always be a thing. Hell nobody is a perfect parent. #RealTalk.

What the fuck does any of this have to do with what Balor has said in here? Has he personally complained about having a shitty life? You're going off on some lecturing tangent that doesn't relate to his initial comments at all.

Actually they relate to his comments very directly as that's what some folk actually do when they go through bad experiences during their childhood. I never said or implied it directly applies to Balor himself.

Again that's a terrible experience I'd imagine but all those folk can do is try and move on with their life. Otherwise they will have a real shitty existence. Assuming they choose to carry on at all.

So it was really just a mix up with semantics. Kids are always conceptualizing and dealing with abstracts. Not knowing the meaning of a word or context can be funny or embarrassing but that's how it goes.

Plus the use of words changes from one generation to the next. It's like when Marty McFly went into the 50's soda shop and the guy couldn't understand a thing he was saying.
