That and "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!" are the only two things I remember from someone who was a huge 40k fan who used to be in my alliance in an online game.

Can only speak for Chaos Gate - it's dated, but decent. Easily abusable, though - as soon as you unlock the Terminator with the autocannon, there's literally no reason to ever use anyone else. He inadvertently soloed the final map for me when I left him upstairs in an isolated position on overwatch just as a huge wave of enemies spawned and rushed him.

(Well... OK, technically he didn't *solo* it, because I killed the final boss with a multi-melta that I used to open the door he was hiding behind).

8th edition? Holy crap, they come out with new editions more often than D&D has the past decade!

Pretty sure back when I played it last, it was 4th edition, and that was only like a decade ago. The Space Marine army I never even wanted but somehow ballooned into about $300-$400 of purchases is still rotting in cases somewhere. (I wanted to play WH Fantasy, but all my friends insisted on 40K and there's no point if you have no one to play against...realized once i was in too deep that I should've just played Chaos and gotten demon units so I could use them for either system :( )

EDIT: I enjoyed Chaos Gate back in the day. I have Dawn of War (2, I think) but have never actually played it...

Yep.

Standard for GW is "new edition every 4 years", but 6E was such a train-wreck they released 7E just two years later.

Yeah yeah, I forgot to specifically state that I meant 40k lol.

I used to live a few block away from a Games Workshop and I really enjoyed the 2 LotR themed games! I really wanted to play more War of the Ring!!

The full rules have been leaked already. So far I'm not impressed, but I stay cautiously optimistic; the rules themselves are pretty good and well-written for a change, but the Indices are a mess, thank the Emperor they are just stop-gaps before real Codices.

As for the new fluff... as always, there's good and bad stuff, I'll just ignore the latter.

Once upon a time, yes. Believe it or not, they used to price their models affordably, regularly interacted with the community, and weren't nearly so lawyer-happy. This was about... oh, 25-30 years ago now by my recollection. Around the time 3E came out in the late 90s, the prices started going up (and they've never stopped since) and a few years later, GW got ridiculously protective of their IP, suing everything that moved and generally acting like enormous corporate dickheads.

I love their games (or used to - I don't buy any of their new stuff anymore, because of what an incredible ripoff it is), but fuck are they a miserly company.
