There is no misconception. They are shit. Any idea they aren't is due to nostalgia goggles being on too tight.

sonic adventure 2 sucked. the platforming levels with sonic were mediocre (sonic is one of those franchises where something was lost when it went to 3d), but what really killed the game were those horrible mech and treasure hunting levels

Sonic Adventure is fun. Only truly questionable sections were Big and Amy. (Gamma was super short and actually kind of fun.) Treasure Hunting worked here because the wide, open maps made Knuckle's gliding satisfying, and the radar/hint system was super generous.

Sonic Adventure 2 is also fun, but far more questionable. The levels are "Sonic 2" compared to SA's "Sonic 1". Very streamlined and more about speed than platforming. I enjoyed the heck out of it.

The treasure hunting gimped the radar/hints and shrunk the maps, but was still playable outside of shit maps like Egg Chamber and that one with the Mario Galaxy mini-planets.

The mech stages were also fun, provided you didn't give a shit about rank. They were far more tanky than Gamma, but loads more enemies and maps tailored to action (rather than existing maps refitted for a rail shooter) made up for it.

Getting A ranks were stupid, though. To this day I've never unlocked Green Hill Zone. >_>

tails is watered down sonic and knuckles is boring
even sonic has bad things like sky chase, the long snowboarding segment, and chaos 4; tails has to go through those sections too, and knuckles has to fight fucking chaos 4 too
the level design was really cramped and awkward and not at all made with the engine in mind

sa2 is sa1 but way watered down, and with the mechs and hunting made much larger and worse

Sonic Adventure 1 was a great game. It did have a few clipping problems (how many times have you fallen through the ground just before the pier in Emerald Coast) and sometimes the camera spazzes out but otherwise the Sonic and Tails levels are super legit. The ice level could have done with less slow stuff but that's really the only stage design complaint I can come up with in Sonic/Tails levels.

Knuckles mode kinda sucked but was at least way better than in 2.

Amy mode, I actually really liked. Annoying personality but constantly running from the green robot and using the hammer made her game mode a refreshing experience.

Big mode... once you get the hang of the fishing, it's not so bad. It doesn't really have any place in the game to begin with though. Also they actually retconned the story within the same game..?

Gamma mode was kinda frustrating, and one of the few things I prefered in 2, but overall it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

2, on the other hand, while still enjoyable, was definitely not as good. A ranks for many of the levels were downright unreasonable, that stupid Sonic in space level was glitchy as hell, the stupid Rouge in space level was the worst thing ever, Knuckles/Rouge levels sucked in general, the driving stages sucked, and overall stsge design just didn't feel as good anyway. And nobody cared about the extra missions. It's thr kind of game that's moderately fun for a bare "get to the credits" playthrough but will make you hate it when you go for 100%.

No, the biggest misconception is that Sonics gameplay was all about going fast, Sonic only had that applicable to the first level and first two for Sonic 2, Sonic was never about holding one direction pressing jump occasionally, that's bad game design over all.

The people who think SA2 and SA1 are bad are also probably the same hypocrites who think OoT and FF7 are the greatest games of all time.

There's this thing called aging, the Sonic Adventure titles just did it poorly.

Sonic's speed made him perfect for an open world. I thought Sonic Adventure was a step in the right direction....but they abandoned that, sadly.

SA2 is my favorite terrible game ever.

I mean, the graphics are dodgy, the gameplay is "okay" at the best parts and borderline unbearable at the worst parts, the camera is incredibly unreliable, the voice acting and dialogue is atrocious, and Chao Garden is a pretty simplistic timewaster.

And yet I love it.

Faker? Ha! You're not even I'LL MAKE good enouYOU EATgh to be mTHOSE WORDSy fake!
