Cookies just store info. Could be any kind of info, really. Whatever the server decides to store on your PC. Which sounds scary but even though I suppose there's probably the potential to use it for malware, I've never heard of such an attack. The threat is reduced a good deal since your OS will only execute code that has the proper extension and presumably your browser stores it in a way that prevents the OS from doing so.

Most commonly, cookies store login information and such.

Actually, come to think, it will also execute programs if explicitly called to do so regsrdless of extension but a cookie hack alone won't cause the PC to do that.
