A complete waste of time. There were only 2 financial companies I was really interested in talking to.

The first one: I knew just from looking at the booth attendant this wasn't going to be good; a woman in her mid-40s who clearly spent way too much time on her hair and make-up this morning. Kind of milfy, which means totally bitchy. I asked the normal question, "Are you looking for anything special here today, or just seeing who's out there?" and she said, "Well, what are you looking for?" "I'm looking for you!" I said, jokingly. She said, "No, what position, exactly, are you interested in?"

Am I crazy, or is that not how this is supposed to work? I mean, it's a job fair, at my school. They came to me, and now I'm expected to know the exact job I want from them? Luckily, I looked into them and was going to ask about a specific program they have, anyway. She told me all of the qualifications before telling me it's full, and won't reopen until after I graduate. Then she said the only job they had available was a "retirement benefits analysis associate training program" (was she expecting me to say that?), and that if I wanted to know more, I could apply online.

The second one: They were talking to another guy at the booth, and I wanted to listen in. He asked them pretty normal questions, "What are you looking for? What do you have to offer?" They told him a couple of things, I couldn't hear it all because of the noise in the room, but they kind of brushed him off with the old "apply online for more information." He left pretty underwhelmed. Then the guys at the booth started making fun of him for "being so stupid." I didn't even bother talking to them, after that.

That first one really pissed me off. Like I'm so fucking stupid for asking what positions they're looking to fill. Am I wrong?

That bitch didn't deserve it. I'd only give those to people I'm interested in, like in The Bachelor. She didn't make it to the next round.

No you are right.

There is two approaches by the companies that go to these things though.

1. we are such an amazing super company anyone should be falling over to work for us and we will only hire the top people so when they come to us they better super impress us with awesome charisma and maybe then we will consider asking them to work for us

2. have tracts outlining possible open positions and actively looking to fill intern positions

I did have someone approach me and talk to me about a job as a buying agent for the Navy. It's not the worst thing in the world, but idk if I want to be a government shill.

career fairs are useless. In my 20s I was one of my company's preferred career fair people for Washington state colleges and we were very much

I hated it, all the kids just looking to have some sort of honest discussion on what we are looking for, how to get hired, whether or not we were hiring right then, and I could just have bullshit canned responses.

I was a DOD contract intern (site construction services at the Bangor sub-base) and the first 3 years of my career I was a procurement agent for a defense contractor working primarily on a Navy contract. If you have any questions I may have some insight.
