The most I drink is on the weekends which is a fifth of whiskey or less usually. Throughout the work week, I might drink two double shots on one day and one beer on some nights. Pretty much, I go 2-3 days out of the week without drinking something alcoholic :(

I was drinking daily for nearly a year, and i've recently taking a tremendous cutback and am down to about once or twice every 10 days. I've been drinking for 8 years abusively, and this is the least i've been drinking in that time span and gradually reducing my intake week by week.

You need to figure out for yourself when enough is enough and when it's time to take it down a notch and start thinking about the health of your body and the longevity of your future. I usually see posts like this and see them as a reach out for help, even though you aren't directly asking for it.

I'm here and my PM box is always open if you need someone to talk to, want some tips or support.

It's defined differently depending on the source. If you drink more days of the week than you don't, I consider that an alcoholic. If you drink on multiple work nights and weekends, yes.

My brother in law was in trouble with the law, and he answered all the answers honestly, and they asked him how often he drank alcohol and he answered with an honest "Maybe once every month or two, or 6-7 times a year" and they made him take 8 weeks of AA. By that definition, I consider very much a casual drinker, not an alcoholic, but they obviously considered that otherwise.

There are many different forms of alcoholics. Being an alcoholic doesn't necessarily mean you are physically dependent on alcohol and you must wake up every morning with a drink.

Some drink more than others, some have worse life consequences than others. Some can handle the boozing longer than others and live into their 60s, 70s (possibly longer, though rare for true heavy drinkers) and others die out in their 40s/50s and then of course a few die much earlier than that.

so my friend that blacks out every weekend isn't an alcoholic, but I am because I like to have some whiskey and cokes some nights on the weekday. I've never blacked out, I hate being hungover so I am rarely hungover unless I had a wild night on a weekend(rare), and don't get myself in trouble with the law over it.

Do you depend on it?

Are you drinking to forget?

Are you drinking to try and self medicate?

If someone were to ask you how much you drink would you lie about it?

Do you often drink alone?

Are you drinking to the point where youre often drunk or blacking out?

There isnt a set amount you have to drink but my dad is an alcoholic and those are the things you look for according to what i learned in AA. If you feel its a problem then thats your sign to do something

That's clearly not what he said. The police considered his brother in law an alcoholic (or at least made him take AA classes) because his BIL admitted he drank roughly once per month. Obviously if your friend gets blackout drunk every weekend that would be much more than his BIL.

I swear he drinks more over the course of one Friday night than me in a whole week, but he's not an alcoholic because he saves it for the weekends lol.

I think it gets really bad when you drink so much you have drastic changes in personality. And the sad thing about that type of drinking is not only do those who do that not even notice that shit happening, but even if they stop some of that personality distress is permanent ("dry drunk").

I mean, if you want to go by quantity, I got drunk every night, but never blackout. I never drink and drive, never got a DUI, DWI, or in any kind or trouble whatsoever when intoxicated. Some nights it was a few drinks, some nights more. I'm not trying to degrade you, or label you, or compare you to anyone, i'm more just trying to offer some insight and trying to work through exactly what you are trying to get out of this thread and what kind of information you are trying to receive.

I was at rock bottom for a long time, it's something i'm familiar with, and experienced with, and has been a big part of my life. I'm currently recovering and know that it's tough. Don't mistake me for someone who is trying to call you something you aren't, or put you in some kind of bracket. I'm just putting in my personal experience into what you are going through.

The only question that matters.

Severe alcoholics are almost constantly drunk and experience physical pain when they stop.

I'm starting to feel the same way OP. I don't have a dependence on alcohol but for the last year and half or so I find myself drinking about 3-4 times a week. Weekends are especially bad as I'm usually with friends who are heavy drinkers.

I've put on quite a bit of weight (about 25lbs) and I believe my drinking is playing a decent part in that.

I promised myself yesterday in fact that I'd put it on hold for some time. I can't say I want to become sober as alcohol plays a large part in my family and friends, but at least go a few a months without it before returning to it in moderation.

I don't believe it'll be that difficult as I don't crave it per say but peer pressure and stress can be a bitch. Nothing like unwinding from a long day of work with some rum or wine.

I would argue it isn't the only question that matters. The severity of the situation doesn't classify one person as an alcoholic and not the other.

Sure, there are cases where alcohol completely consumes people's lives and they become non functional members of society and quite possibly end up on the streets, further exacerbating their situation in terms of poor diet, limited access to healthcare, etc.

There are also cases of people earning a good living, even better than most, who are able to hold down jobs (good jobs, even) yet drink excessively (everyday, almost everyday, or binging hardcore every weekend for years)---they end up dead too.
