That's really bad, especially at that age. I'd suggest gaining some height to fix that ratio... or, I guess, losing weight. Either way works.

Misconceptions aside, dieting is for losing weight, workout is for your health and well being.

Both are good, but I see all the time people who are overweight going out and running and I just feel like people have a limit on willpower and focusing on both at the same time causes people to fail. Working out helps mentally, which might give you more motivation, but don't try to run off the calories you ate for dinner.

It's like people work out and then they feel the need to reward themselves with food, and then they fail to lose any weight, get discouraged and quit, which gives them a hopeless attitude so they give up all because they're not educated.

I've taken medication that's killed my appetite as a side effect. If there weren't so many scams out there it might be an easy fix. America's view on obesity is so skewed it's no wonder there are so many obese people. It's almost like even doctors don't take it seriously.

Best diet you can do for yourself is by eating mainly fruits and vegetables. There's no feasible limit on how many fruits and vegetables you can eat and gain weight from it.

I'm about 5'9" and went from 130 to 190 over the course of about 4 years. I'm in the 160s now, and have been for about a year, but I looked like a St. Lawrence beluga in this one photo I saw the other day. It made me realize why people I don't see often kept asking me if I'd lost weight. I didn't notice it until Sea World's finest appeared in the photo. Muscle mass does make a difference as well though, which wasn't an excuse I could use. My advice is to skip a meal each day and limit your sugar intake. That's all I did and I lost 15lbs last summer.

Me:

240.2/5'10 = 34.5 BMI

You:

206/5'5 = 34.3 BMI

I have the greater BMI based on the weight in the topic title, though I just sweat off four pounds and factoring that in I'd have a BMI of 33.9.

Whichever way you want to slice it, we're pretty close.

Genetics is not the biggest factor. Your diet and what you put in your mouth is the biggest factor for your weight.

Are you talking about weight or overall health?

Though I will admit I'm salty about those damned twigs who can eat more than I do, be just as inactive, and never gain weight with their ridiculous metabolism.

That's because "most people" may not have some sort of predisposition to cancer or an organ with a shorter lifespan. If your genes decided you're going to waste away and die, healthy living won't matter. Likewise, if your genes are good, eat cheeseburgers and stuff and live into your 80s. You may have a slightly shorter lifespan if you don't look after yourself, or a worse quality of life near the end, but genes matter. Why the fuck do insurance companies care about it? For fun?

Most of my family didn't care about being healthy for generations (drinking, smoking, poor nutrition), and there are people like my grandma's aunt who lived to be 96 (born in the 19th century, which was uncommonly old, and others almost lasted that long). My great granddad worked in a coal mine starting at age 12 and got mustard gassed in WWI, but he didn't die prematurely either. Those are just a couple off the top of my head from my mom's side, but that's about how it all goes. Conversely, my dad's family are a mixed bag and more normal (I think). He eats right and works out every day and has been in good shape his whole life, then he almost died of cancer in 80s and has a bunch of other complications that seem to keep adding up. Genetics are literally you, to deny them playing a central role in everything is ignorant (or denial if everyone you know keeps imploding) and about as worthwhile to argue about as "what's the Pacific Ocean's favourite animal". It doesn't take a genius to comprehend statistics.

Have you been following them around every hour of every day recording what they eat? Have you kept a detailed log of everything you've eaten? Chances are if they're twigs and you're 240lbs your TDEE is significantly higher than theirs and you just eat more than they do.

Maybe he only eats a couple large meals a day and nothing else. Maybe he eats more in social settings. Maybe you snack a hell of a lot more than he does. Maybe he makes better overall food choices. Maybe he fidgets gets up and moves around a lot more throughout the day. There are dozens of factors that could be at play here, the least likely of which is "I'm 100lbs heavier than him but somehow his BMR 1000 calories more per day than mine".
