It's kind of unbelievable when you think about it.

An organization that still exists and is still successful today, and that has been in continuing existence since the days of the Roman Empire...

I was raised Catholic, and ever since I got into learning about Rome, I noticed something interesting during Mass. That the altar looks like the ancient altars that Roman priests would use to worship the gods. its the same altar just used for a different god. and the robes of the priest I think are similar kindof to old Roman clothing. so that's cool. I'm not catholic anymore but my family is, and they drag me to it sometimes. And that's one bit of interest I can pull out of an otherwise boring hour.

Are we talking strictly about the Western empire , which formally died c. AD 476, or the Eastern Empire, which technically hung on til 1453?

I bet there's probably a few other institutions/governments that have survived in some form since 1453. I guess it also depends on what you would define as an "institution".

No, I mean the western empire. If we talk about the eastern empire technically you could say it continued even later than that with the Ottoman state.

The Ottoman empire was not Roman at all. The Eastern/Byzantine Empire was literally a Roman remnant, the Ottoman Empire was an entirely new state on the same territory.

There's lots of stuff like that, like the date Christmas is held, depictions of God, etc.
