https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/13/well/live/a-transgender-learning-gap-in-the-emergency-room.html

Sometimes the patient is registered as the wrong gender immediately from triage, resulting in a strained communication from the get-go. Other times, a staff member lets out a surprised gasp as a patient undresses for a physical exam. Then there are the moments when providers call a patient a “he/she” or “they” on rounds. Private rooms are also hard to come by in busy, overcrowded emergency rooms, and patients may be inappropriately clustered by gender.

None of this, for the most part, is out of malice. Instead it’s because of our own ignorance and stems from our lack of education and training on providing sensitive and evidence-based care for transgender patients. In one study, half of these patients had to teach their doctors about transgender health issues at some point. A Twitter hashtag #transhealthfail started trending in August of 2015, when transgender patients shared stories about their negative experiences with the health care system. Patients continue to use the hashtag today. These holes in medical education and training can cost lives. Over 70 percent of transgender people nationwide say they have experienced serious discrimination in a health care setting. A third of transgender people postpone or completely avoid seeking health care because of the fear of discrimination. One in five have yet to disclose their transgender status to any medical provider.

No fucking shit, Sherlock. You're expecting people to undo and relearn thousands of years of a conditioned norm in human nature, to modify the very way their language and society function for an incredibly minuscule number of people.

Should transgender people have the same rights as everyone else? Absolutely. Should they be maligned? No way.
But that said, completely changing your identity like that is an unnatural and pretty brand new concept for mother nature, so it's unbelievably stupid to say "Hey it's been like 2 or 3 years since transgenderism went mainstream. Why can't everyone perfectly figure it out yet?"

Not to mention that the healthcare system is strained well beyond capacity. It's a pretty ignorant and selfish expectation.

You know, in a triage setting like one in the ED, that bit of social history is probably at the absolute bottom.

Oh fuck off seriously.

In a split second if you see something with a penis, it's a male. If you see something vagina, it's a female.

It's that simple and it always will be. Transgender people need to stop trying to get offended over everything, or get people into trouble just for the sake of it.

no dammit, you're supposed to sit down and interview every patient and confirm what they identify as. and you need to make sure that they're always identifying as that thing, and that any treatments that presume an identification are run by them first.

Until some nurse, doctor, or hospital refuses to treat someone that's transgendered or actually violates a right, there is no issue here.

I feel like this would be akin to me getting upset in the ER because the nurse referred to me as Mexican when I'm not Mexican.

This. Like, who cares? They're still giving proper treatment, who cares if they made a mistake with gender identity? It's not leading to negative treatment, it's just a minor hiccup. And like people said, it IS, by definition, unnatural. So transgendered individuals might have to accept this for the time being, something like this won't change for a while.

Honestly, it shouldnt change. Transgenders make up such a small portion of the population that it does not make sense to cater to them specifically. If they wish to be transgender, then they should understand it is a very rare thing to deal with.

At the same point, are we going to have to learn about Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria so that we don't offend people who have that?

If you get offended because someone doesnt know a relatively rare and unknown thing, then there is something wrong with you.

I can't help but think that, from a medical care standpoint, the person's biological gender is a bit more important than their gender identity, especially in an emergency situation.

If it's just regular doctor's visits, then yeah the doctors and nurses need to do better. Communication is key, and that goes both ways.

Discrimination is bad, but the article is sort of all over the place.

What discrimination are patients facing besides misgendering? What health issues do they need to educate their provider about? It mentioned something about hormone therapies but not how this is a problem. (Do most physicians just not know what hormone therapy is/how it affects people? What conditions does it affect?)

The gist of the article is "seniors don't know new stuff, kids are learning new stuff, med schools are restructuring their curriculums." But it doesn't really get into any of the nitty gritty.

c'est la vie.
