If a student meets the following criteria:
-Their household makes less than 125k annually
-They attend a public NY college / university (SUNY OR CUNY)
-They work in the state of NY for at least 4 years following graduation

I don't know if there was already a topic on this a few days ago but I couldn't find one so here

What happens if they don't work in the state for 4 years? Does someone come around to kick their ass?

If I was the father for that family I'd ask for a temporary pay cut or work less hours so I hit 124,900ish.

It becomes a loan.

it becomes a regular student loan....This is a good idea and a great start towards making education in this country more affordable.

aaaand there's the kicker

Once the students finish their fourth year, they'll realize that there are no jobs in upstate NY and will have to move out of state and pay a loan anyway.

Would have been nice having this when I went to college. I would have met all of those requirements. Now I'm here paying my student loans for god only knows how long.

It's not. SUNY and CUNY are already overcrowded as hell and started becoming an issue almost a decade ago.

It also devalues the degree because most people take that degree to pretty much downstate NY. An extremely competitive and unaffordable area with very little jobs. Forcing people to stay is just going to do further damage to the NY economy.

Not to mention the tax increases. Literally this area has 3 of the highest property tax counties in the entire country for example. Nickle and diming has already become NY's way to gather the funds to pay for all these shits. You know, instead of legalizing weed.

Well I'm glad a state did this.

New York is big so whether or not it works there should determine what would happen in the rest of the country.

Why?

Increased taxes, people who make slightly more than 125k get shafted on the taxes and on having to pay for their kids tuition, devalued degrees because everyone and their grandma will get one to be a government employee, even higher taxes when the state employees demand cushy pensions as a reward for their inefficient labor.

I'm not sure why people argue the exact dollar amount in these situations, they have to put a cut off somewhere so somebody is always going to be upset.

In theory this should make the colleges themselves much more competitive since it will theoretically Skyrocket the number of applications.

But all of this is just conjecture since no large state has ever tried anything like this, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out

I don't know what you are talking about. Upstate NY has growing tech areas like Rochester and Syracuse.

There was already a topic on this. I am surprised in this and the old ones no one has brought up that most of the people that qualify for that program can already get free college. The Pell Grant and TAP can cover CUNY/SUNY tuition.

Because the threshold to fully cover tuition is about ~$50k and now it's $125k. Before, after about $68k, you got nothing at all.

Which is great for people who want to go into tech (apart from having to live in shit holes like Syracuse and Rochester), but most other fields are still pretty much fucked. And the inflation in amount of degrees is going to far outweigh workplace demand for them.

An entry level person with a Bachelor's isn't going to earn enough to live anywhere near it though. Hope they love commuting.
