I was making $50,000 last year as a teacher, but I got zero respect. None. Nada. Always got blamed for everything that went wrong. Wasn't allowed to do my job. Was constantly having shit talked to me and if I said anything back, got into trouble. Had to deal with a fucking crazy ass bitch that was always putting her nose in my business and trying to get me into trouble. And there was no way to discipline the kids at the school because they didn't care.

Went to the local commissary and now I work for the government. I make half what I made as a teacher but that's fine. I get a shit ton more respect. No stress at all. Access to the base.

My point is it's not all about money. If I want to get a 2nd job and make close to my teaching salary I easily can.

True. And if I did, I could get a 2nd job and take home around $2300-2500 a month.

That's all fine and dandy, but I do have several questions:

1. Where do you currently live? By yourself, with your parents, with roommates, a wife? Do you have kids?

2. What state do you live in, and do you live in a big city?

Just curious, because I'm trying to rationalize how you can live off of $12.50 an hour. I don't think I could possibly do that and pay for an apartment as well as food and gas, unless I was extremely conservative with money.

Live in TX with my wife. And like I said, if I was alone I could get a 2nd job. If I was single it would be a lot easier to do that too because I wouldn't have a relationship getting in the way of a 2nd job.

Also, I'm a tight wad so that helps :-)

I got a similar story TC. Went to college, tried out office jobs and hated the monotony of it. Now I work as a pest control technician for a family-friend's company, make $15 an hour, and I couldn't be happier.

Also, I dunno how people making $50,000 or $60,000 get into financial trouble. My girlfriend and I combined make around $35,000 a year total, and that's being generous. We live in mathematically the most expensive place in the continental U.S., and we live very comfortably. If you don't spend money like an imbecile, it's not really that difficult.

Hell yes *gives Forest Logic a high 5*

Also, at least you know that your Pest Control job is somewhat secure. What's the point in making $50,000 a year if there's no job security?

Well, to people asking how I survive:

I take home about $1700 a month.

- $500 for rent (with my wife and I paying half)
- $100 for insurance (with USAA)
- $25 for phone (cricket)
- $50 for gas (economy car)
- $200 for groceries

That's about $900 in stuff I gotta pay. So I have about $800 to do whatever with. I spend maybe $100-200 a month on entertainment because wife wants to go out sometimes, but I live like a hermit. I'm a gamer, it's what we do. I watch a lot of DVD's (have almost 1000), and have a shit ton of games for NES, Sega, PlayStation, and Super NES. So I make my own entertainment a lot of the time. Also, there's parks. You can find good recipes on the internet too.

Believe it or not, my job doesn't actually involve much killing, it's mostly preventative treatments, and the majority of bugs that do get killed are shitty ones like termites and cockroaches. And TBQH I don't really enjoy the act of killing bugs, I really like most insects (I always let them free at home) and feel legitimately bad when I have to hurt them on the job.

What I do enjoy is having a job that lets me go outside all day, choose my own schedule, drive around listening to podcasts, seeing different places and meeting new people everyday, all without a supervisor or someone breathing down my neck reminding me that I have some stupid deadline.

What about retirement, general savings, or incidentals? Also, I don't understand how people survive on $200/month for food and don't have the precursors to heart disease.

And I don't feel like we buy a crazy amount of food. It's typically:

- Veggies
- Chicken
- Fish
- Whole grain pasta
- Whole grain rice
- Water
- Nuts + dried fruit
- Whole grain bread
- Cheese
- Milk
- Eggs

Then there are one-offs to be refilled like spices, propane, pet food, olive oil, condiments, coffee, etc.

I go to Costco a lot and buy stuff in bulk. 40 bottles of water for like $3. 18 protein shakes for $25. Then they have good deals on eggs and waffles. Also, hot pockets and turkey burgers. You can find pretty good frozen food too, something I learned from working at the commissary. We make a lot of our own stuff too like stuffed peppers, potato salad, fish, fried rice, tuna, French toast, cereal, pop tarts, mac n cheese (home made), greek salad, and just stuff like frozen Chinese food and frozen lasagna.

Also, when I say $200 I mean that that's what I spend. She spends about the same. We alternate every 2 weeks. But if it were just me I could live off of that.

$400/month on food seems more reasonable. However, please consider a healthier diet.

If you want to get hardcore about it, you can get a few bags of bread and a few stacks of cheese and have grilled cheese. Also, ramen noodles, frozen burritos, beans, rice, and hot dogs. Not the healthiest diet, but you can eat for cheap if you aren't picky.

Few tips:
1. Buy generic when you can (rice, pasta, etc.)
2. Do some serious meal planning and prepping for the week and then go to the store
3. Pick meals that you can make in bulk and are filling
4. Stick with cheaper veggies and sometimes frozen veggies can be much cheaper than fresh

My girlfriend and I spend maybe $120 on food total, every month. And we don't eat shit, we cook masterpiece dinners. That's how, FTR. You cook at home every night.

If you buy the most overpriced, expensive groceries, yeah I guess you could spend over $200, but expensive =/= healthy. You just have to be thrifty and actually cook meals from scratch.

As long as you cook at home, most food you make will tend to be pretty healthy compared to going out.

Asherlee's right though, plan your food out definitely. Every Sunday night, me and my GF plan out what we're gonna make for dinner each day that week. We always end up with leftovers, which is a big key to saving money. If you get leftovers on a regular basis, you never need to spend money on lunch.

Also, Aldi is a godsend.
https://storelocator.aldi.us/Presentation/AldiSued/en-us/Start

Go see if any are near you. It's a German supermarket that started popping up in America the last few years, that sells mostly their own product lines (which are all top quality as good as name brands since they're usually made in Europe) and cuts out unnecessary expenses for themselves, so their prices are ludicrously cheap. I'm talking boxes of cereal for like $1.30, a whole bag of sweet peppers for like $2 bucks, family packs of chicken breast for like $6, etc...

I don't wanna sound like a hack, but this topic is basically what the website in my sig is entirely about. (The two of us run it. We're the poor couple in question lol) I could go on about this stuff for days.
