I did it for 3 years and I guess if you are teaching something that isn't state tested like Elementary School or something like Choir, Art, or Spanish or something, then I can see why people would want those jobs. It's good pay and time off and nothing is expected of you.

But if you teach something that is state tested like English/Math/Science/History, like I did, then you get no respect. What happens is your kids have to take these things called "bench mark tests" which are non-graded tests that are given to measure progress. If your kids don't do well on those, whether they just didn't try or 1/3 of them were spec. ed, or whatever the reason, then other teachers will pull up your test scores and go to the principal and try and make it sound like you aren't doing your job. If that teacher has been there a while, then they try to make it sound like you need to listen to them and follow their lesson plans. Then the principal forces you to listen to them. Then if your kids fail, it's all your fault. The teacher telling you what to do doesn't have to take responsibility.

So in other words, you don't get any respect and aren't allowed to do your job most of the time. So why the fuck would anybody want to deal with that? That's why I left to go work at the local commissary on the military base. It's a cut in pay but they treat me a hell of a lot better.
