I think it has good themes and does touch on bullying well. It also does a good portraying of what it means to be lonely.

The biggest problem is the goddamn double standard. Hannah IS bringing a part of her treatment upon herself, but she's frequently portrayed as not being the one in fault. And the thing is, it's almost like the series is suggesting EVERYTHING bad that ever happens in that school is all dumped on this one girl for whatever reason, except not really. Yeah she lost some friends, yeah she got something embarassing directed at her, people spread rumors about her but that happens to like a LOT of people, even ones popular. And sometimes, it's like the person she's literally painting a target on their back didn't even really do wrong lol... like maybe they're shy or yeah they're young and they freaked. It happens, they're freaking high schoolers and are essentially toddlers. They're never gonna know EXACTLY what to do. I dunno, maybe I just want Hannah to get off her fucking high horse.

I haven't seen the whole series yet, but it's like so far "how to get bullied and how to bully others in return." Like it's literally revealed that she just... misunderstood something as well.

Oh, and the main character is really really dumb, cringey, and totally going nuts, and so in Tony. Like the reveal of the full story better be good. Otherwise, I dunno about this series. I think it's gonna get praised more than it deserves

+1.

though some shit is admittedly pretty dumb when counting reasons... dunno if it was like that in the book but banal shit like what zach did shouldn't even count.

of course, it's probably meant to showcase how stuff piles on from all directions but still ends up being incredibly nitpicky.

Lol and... yeah the tape about Clay. What a disappointment.

Look, you can say victim blaming all your want, she pushed away more than enough people that could've helped her just as much as people did things to her. Obviously she doesn't deserve any of it, but now like at least half the treatment that Clay got doesn't fucking make any sense, and the other people should've been even more desperate to not let Clay play the last tape.

It's a badly written drama. They tried to do something but realized they needed a season's worth of episodes and couldn't figure out how to make it smooth. So you have episodes where shit don't make sense and the people getting the blame for all this doesn't even feel like they actually did anything.

Are you not aware that this show is based off a book?
And that everything actually does make sense if you leave your preconceived judgements behind and actually think about the mental and emotional ramifications of even tiny "inconsequential" things?

At least Alex is written much better as the story went on, but he feels like such a different character by this point that his portraying in the beginning don't make ANY sense.

Well it must've not been a very good book either. Like I said, I like the themes, and I think it has very good portrayals here and there. But it's a badly written drama, and it's heavily inconsistent with motivations that make absolutely no sense. A good story shouldn't just ride entirely on heavy themes just to have a gist of being "good." You can say inconsequential, but all I'm criticizing here is the story.

I really want enjoyed it. Like others, initially I was mad at Hannah because the issues seemed small and she seemed like a shitty person as well, but as I got further I realized that all the issues added together. What Zach did was small, but in her eyes, it was one more in a list of difficulties she was having. Like they kept saying, the tapes wee her truth

She's a flawed person and her character comes off in a a negative way, but I'm pretty sure that's on purpose. Her being bad or good I doesn't excuse what others did.

Also, that suicide scene was brutal.

Hey, it's almost like Hannah is a flawed person and makes mistakes...

Yeah she's flawed, but there's no good writing here to take advantage of it. Maybe it's the directing? but it keeps painting the wrong overall picture, and things that should've resolved so much easier is dragged on for the sake of drama.

And I understand, it is a build up thing, but by the point in Zach's story, it wasn't convincing to me. The worst thing is that he was worried at all. He still had the note. It was just a misunderstanding, so what does he even have to worry about? The poet guy honestly didn't really do anything bad, he was just portrayed to be such an asshole that it never came off as a guy who just wanted to let others read what he thought was good.

Jesus fuck, how long does this fucking series wanna stay on the rape scenes. It's sickening to use shock value to hide bad writing. It's honestly getting worse for me
