The FBI obtained a secret court order last summer to monitor the communications of an adviser to presidential candidate Donald Trump, part of an investigation into possible links between Russia and the campaign, law enforcement and other U.S. officials said.

The FBI and the Justice Department obtained the warrant targeting Carter Page’s communications after convincing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judge that there was probable cause to believe Page was acting as an agent of a foreign power, in this case Russia, according to the officials.

Three years before Page became an adviser to the Trump campaign, he came to the attention of FBI counterintelligence agents, who learned that Russian spy suspects had sought to use Page as a source for information.

I'm sorry, is there really a problem if the current administration is friendly with Russia? What POSSIBLE BAD could come out of stronger, more positive Russo-American ties?

We've tried being friends with Russia multiple times. It's never worked out.

They're not our friend, they're not our ally, and if we try to cozy up to them we're just going to end up with a knife in our back again.

Also, outside of all that, if Russia went to these lengths to recruit and direct people in Trump's campaign/administration and affect the course of the election, I'd seriously question their motives. As should you. The important questions we need answered are "how" and "why".

We're not "not allies" with Russia because of the Cold War. We've imposed sanctions and the like on them in the 21st century for things that they've done in the 21st century.

Stronger Russo-American ties aren't inherently a good thing if they aren't accompanied by policy changes in Russia.

That's a lazy way of looking at the world.

i'm gonna quote Romney again:

Mitt Romney called Russia “without question our number one geopolitical foe”

Romney’s comments came in the context of President Barack Obama’s “hot mic” moment with Russian President Dimitri Medvedev Monday after a meeting in Seoul. Obama was heard telling Medvedev he would have “more flexibility” on missile defense after the presidential election.

“This is without question our number one geopolitical foe, they fight for every cause for the world’s worst actors. The idea that he has more flexibility in mind for Russia is very, very troubling indeed,” Romney said.

Wolf Blitzer asked if he thought Russia was a bigger foe than Iran, China or North Korea.

“I’m saying in terms of a geopolitical opponent, the nation which lines up with the world’s worst actors,” said Romney. “Of course the greatest threat that the world faces is a nuclear Iran and a nuclear North Korea is already troubling enough.”

“But when these terrible actors pursue their course in the world and we go to the United Nations looking for ways to stop them; when [Syrian President Bashir al-] Assad for instance is murdering his own people we go to the United Nations and who is it that always stands up with the world’s worst actors, it’s always Russia, typically with China alongside,” he continued. “And so in terms of a geopolitical foe, a nation that’s on the Security Council ... and is of course is a massive nuclear power, Russia is the geopolitical foe.”

Romney has consistently criticized Obama over his policy of “resetting” relations with Russia after the two countries’ relations reached a nadir in August 2008, at the end of the Bush administration and after the Russia-Georgia War..

And low and behold. All these years later and Assad used chemical weapons on innocent people (Violating the US agreeent with Russia) and now we're firing missiles at them

Russia is a bad country and we have absolutely nothing to gain strategically from being allies with them.

That lie I've actually encountered quite a bit. FISA warrants are a bitch to get, especially on a member of a political campaign during a fucking election year. Like jeez.

That repeated lie, combined with how every day all the Trumpers are "well this is case closed on Russia!" makes me rather worried for them.

It's like they think that because they say or imagine it, that means it'll come true.

All I've ever read about the matter is that the FISA courts are essentially just a rubber stamp and they deny very few warrant requests.

Eh, the bar is fairly high most of the time. You can't just waltz up and ask for a warrant. There's several layers of review and approval you gotta go through.
