Is it valid to do that? You almost alays see IV but every now and then you'll see IIII. Which works mathematically but Iunno if it's a no-no in proper Roman numeral form.

There's a clock in this room that has IIII for 4 o'clock.

It's done on clocks for symmetry and balance. Been done that way since the Roman Empire

interesting, never thought about that, but i suppose it does do that

{I, II, III, IIII}
{V, VI, VII, VIII}
{IX, X, XI, XII}

3 subsets of 4 elements that share a common symbol in each subset (I, V, X)

that's neat

i have seen this before, but not terribly often

I used to have a beautiful roman numeral clock that I loved, but the IIII drove me absolutely insane to the point that I ended up getting rid of it.

I'm one of those nerds that can rattle off any number in roman numerals off the top of my head.

only times i've ever seen IIII for 4 is when someone is counting and the 5 is supposed to be the IIII with a diagonal line going through it but they haven't gotten to 5 yet.

I know someone with a clock that has IIII on it.

Even I was confused so I found this awhile back.
