most people don't read it.

If you buy a ticket for United Airlines, does it say anything about potentially being forced to forfeit your seat for reimbursement and another flight offered in a situation of overbooking?

Just throwing that out there.

Oh you're right, we all missed the part that says "If our employees need seats, we will rush into the plane and force you off. Refuse, and we'll beat you, concuss you, and then blame you all for it after and embarrass you".

It was like 20 pages in, most people don't see that one.

Are they supposed to just let the guy say no? If you have to force him off, then you have to force him off.

People never read that stuff, it contains so much content that it would literally take them 15-20 minutes to read it all even at a moderate pace.

I've read a couple of them over the past decade or so. I honestly think it's for the best that people don't read them. So many less people would agree to them or to purchase whatever it is.

I used to read them start to finish but I'm convinced the reason they make them so long os to discourage people from reading them.

How do overbooked flights even happen?

Did United try to sell more tickets than they had available seats? Did they downgrade to a smaller plane last minute or something? I never understood how that worked.

On purpose. United (and most/all other major airlines) sells more tickets than they have seats because inevitably some people will not be able to make the flight for one reason or another. They would rather pay people to take a later flight than have a flight with some empty seats.

No reason to not sell tickets after the max capacity as "over booked" at a cheaper price, that way people at least know what they're getting into. It's a sleazy tactic.

Yeah but the craziest part is they don't even shoot to fill the flight with their overbooking. They shoot to have to pay off exactly the right number of people that minimizes loss.

Like, if they have to pay somebody $800 when they get booted, they factor that in as something that should happen from time to time or else they're losing money.
