Why is this such a flawed logic and why do some people think this logic is 100% true?

The vague idea is that a store should listen to the demands of the market if it wants to get its supply side of things right. Which is a good notion, but ignores statistics and averages. Obviously, if 98% of your supermarket customer base is satisfied but there's always that one old granny who can't find her pickled artichoke hearts in red wine vinegar and paprika or whatever weird product, it's probably not right to change your entire supply model to accommodate her or else she "takes her business elsewhere".

One thing I will say though to stir the pot: people who work in retail can be the whiniest bitches imaginable. /r/talesfromretail is 90% "God, I can't believe this customer didn't understand the specific way our store works, here's my highly artistic rendition of how upset she got even though in real life she was just mildly irritated at the inconvenience".

The problem is that one or two bad person acts like they're the vocal majority. They act like their opinion is everyone's opinion. And then they make threats about how they've always been a loyal customer for years now and they've never been treated this way and that they're going to tell all their friends about how they won't give her what she wants.

So no customers aren't always right. A good business wouldn't want a toxic customer.

I've always perceived it as "you tell one person to piss off, word will spread" logic.

Bending over backwards for everyone makes everyone feel appreciated by the store. If you send someone off fuming then they'll tell everyone what they experienced and you might start an epidemic of bad public perception.

Not saying that's guaranteed to happen (in fact I think it's kind of unlikely) but businesses never want to take that risk, no matter how small.

It's really more bitchy customers who have a chip on their shoulder that's the problem and businesses not being able to handle those people as they should be. If they're going to rag on your business for not accommodating them, they were going to do it anyway, going out of your way to please them probably wouldn't change much.

Funny because I've seen a manager chased a customer out with a bat of their store once with other customers cheering away. I think reasonable people knows when a company is trying their best vs when a customer is being an irrational idiot.

Well then it's literally false advertisement. I've seen a few companies won in court for false advertisement, though.

They are. The cashier or whatever customer service guy is serving me has to treats me with love and respect if I want to return, otherwise I don't come back to their services, post a terrible online review where I don't recommend the place, and possibly sue them for misconduct.

Do you retail workers ever try passive-aggressive or overly nice tactics to see how that does down?

I don't know if they'd be pissed even more or just feel helpless because you technically were nice to them

I liked Ian's analogy on the latest Completely Unnecessary Podcast, about how customers are like burritos. Basically that you can't see what's in the inside but they're usually good, but once in awhile you get one that's rotten or disgusting and you have to throw it out.

It doesn't mean the customer is actually right. They just have to feel like they're right and make yourself look incompetent / blame corporate if you have to but don't give in to their demands if they're obviously fucking wrong.
