The corporations' idea of customer service is regurgitating generic greetings over and over again, even though anybody that's ever shopped at a store knows 90% of customers hate when an employee keeps stalking them, forcing sales down their throat and asking if they need help when they're trying to shop in peace.

yeah I agree it's annoying but

1. If you're undecided the interaction may push you to buy. Happy bosses

2. Those who WANT to be greeted and helped would complain if they had to seek the assistance forcefully instead of being offered. The rest of us will dismiss them and carry on with a mild annoyance at worst. From that point of view the employee should always propose help to start with
