Why did Jean Valjean burn himself with the chisel in Thenardier's house when he untied himself?

i dont remember that scene, was it to like show he was a badass or something?

He untied himself and then took the burning chisel from Thenardier's fireplace after they were gonna rob him. But instead he takes it and burns himself and then throws the chisel out the window, and tells them to do with him what they will. He only doesn't die because Javert comes in with the police
