it's too MMO-ish to be really fun as a single player game and it's too solitary to be a good MMO.

but it's a decent game to chill out with and explore some dungeons, plus there is a solid community on Xbox One

one time buy, and then there's a cash shop for cosmetics/mounts/etc and i think an optional sub that gives you some perks

No it's terrible and it's nothing like Elder Scrolls

I loved it for the first two months, but got bored with it fast. That was around its PS4/XBO launch though, when you had to do pretty much every sidequest in order to move to the next area.

There was an update in October that lets you go anywhere and just have enemies scale with you, but I ended up not liking that.

If you went into it expecting Skyrim-like depth from an MMO, that's on you. It should have been obvious it'd be "nothing like Elder Scrolls" when they made it anything other than a single-player game.

How much is a good deal for it? It's free this week, but maybe $25?

For the Gold Edition with the DLC, maybe, but you should probably try it first. You can get the regular edition for $15 or less used.

I bought a few copies for $6 when Redbox was selling them off.

I only played the beta for a few hours but it didn't interest me at all. Felt like a clumsier version of the real thing. I've heard a lot of good things about how they've improved it since release though, especially on consoles.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted by the Morrowind expansion.

That's the other thing, maybe if I was in a real TES rut I'd pick it up to get my fix, but I can't see myself ever wanting to play it when I have WoW for an MMO.

I bought it for my fiance this Christmas (post TU update) and we played like 10-20 hours of it. I felt like the level scaling killed the sense of progression since you just go anywhere from the start. They should have kept the leveled areas, but increased experience gain or something so you didn't have to grind every last quest in order to survive the next area.

I also didn't like some minor changes, like gimping crafting experience gain when breaking stolen items.
