That's actually my favorite novel. Harry Turtledove does a lot of research into what he writes about too. Like, Beddigford's character was based on a real person. Who got busted down and promoted a lot.

I love his work, but one of the biggest problems I have is he'll take forever to get to the point, but the world leading to that point is usually worth it.
