Probably because it's an unessecary expense. There are plenty of cheaper, older cars that are perfectly driveable, but people buy new cars to show off or something.

The question I have to ask is "why do you can about what they think ?", it is your car. Do with it as you wish, drive it how you want to drive it.

Because it's a stupid investment. You lose a lot of value once you drive it off the lot.

A used car has a lot better value and it doesn't lose thousands of dollars when you take it off the lot.

@Mernardi
That is true but a brand new car is also not going to run up a lot of repair costs, and your not inheriting someone else's problems.

Some people only sell a car only because it costs to much to fix, and for a new car if you take good care of it the problems that do happen can sometimes be very easy and affordable to fix.

A new car also has exactly what a person wants in it where a used car is "maybe you find exactly what you want, maybe you don't".

People can also keep a new car for much longer then a used car depending on the used car's condition and how much work needs to be put into it.

Fact of the matter is that most people make stupid investments, in all sorts of stuff. How many people on this very forum buy 100% useless $1000 anime figurines and other useless crap, but then turn around and say "omg don't buy a new car"!!"?

I'm not really saying that a car is a good investment, cause it's not but:

1. Not everything you buy has to be an investment
2. If you're on track for retirement, living comfortably, etc, then it's really no different than any other unnecessary monthly expense

But used cars only exist because people like TC waste their money on new ones. We should be happy for them. Thank you, TC.

Exactly.

Let some idiot take the depreciation hit while all you have to do is come in get more bang for your buck.

A brand new base Camry will come in the low 20s while that same amount of money can put me in a 4 year old Mustang GT.

get a new car if you want. its your money, do what you want with it. if you dont care about depreciation cuz you're rich enough to eat the cost of the car, then go for it.

otherwise yeah, cars lose value the most in the first 2 years. so when you sell it, youll lose a ton of money in the cost cost of the car (cost you paid minus the ammount you get when you sell it)

but whatever,

I love how people assume buying a new car is the only unnecessary expense. What about kids, grad schools, paying for some mortgage on a house above your means or buying a house without using your head, pets, drinking, vacations abroad, student loans on a liberal arts degree at a private college, smart phones, starbucks, lottery tickets, video games, a gold diggin gf or wife, gas on long commutes, eating out, cable, sports events, cigarettes. weddings, and etc.

For yall hating on new cars yall can seriously take the nearest cab to haters alley because yall are so asshurt lmao.

Sometimes the highest trim has BS that a person does not want, like a sunroof or a moonroof, automatic windshield wipers, and/or auto headlights for example.

Most times the higher 'trim' engine does not make a huge difference on MPG. In fact, some 'bigger' engines get better MPG.

Don't have anything against buying new, especially if you plan on keeping it til it dies which should last you a pretty long time if you look after it right and just can't be bothered going through the used car search process.

What I don't get are people who feel they have to change to a new car every 5 years or before they reach 60k miles or first major service. They seem to think the car is basically broken after then Like to avoid having to spend big ($1000) on that first major service, they would rather spend another $25k on a new car because they think the service is too expensive. Or to continue having car payments just to avoid said major more expensive than normal service. And this mentality actually isn't that too uncommon.

like what's the logic in that lol.

Interesting. You want the performance "look", but you don't want the actual performance.

Uh yeah, not everyone is a car person. Hell, most people really car people, they just want to get from A to B in something that they like. There's a reason why cars have lots of different body styles. By that logic all cars should just look the same.

Also, for most people, will they ever really get to experience all that performance? Driving day to day in bumper to bumper traffic? The answer is rarely to flat out no.
