then these same buffoons play snake eater (subsistence) with over the shoulder camera

Snake Eater didn't have OTS camera. Subsistence might have but SE did not.

The first-person aim does horrible misbalance the game--especially against Mantis--but as you say, you don't have to use it, and the game is a supplement instead of a replacement anyway.
