There is no real winning option. If those employees cannot board more flights would be delayed and more people couldn't fly.

Usually they handle this before they board to prevent this sorta situation so they really should be more careful in this. Maybe if a plane is already boarded the company has to accept the customers can't be removed

maybe united should properly book their flights and not expect it to be resolved by overbooking then expect people to get up because they overlooked the scenario that everyone might want to take their flight?
