They die eventually causing you much grief.
They often ruin furniture and other various things around the house.
If you're lazy don't get a dog, they require much work to train and you'll always be cleaning up their poo unless you turn your backyard into a landmine field of shit.

Vet bills. They can rack up really quick. And people find it odd for some reason. "You mean I have to pay for the care you gave my pet?" Yeesh.

This is another good one, don't get a pet unless you can handle a surprise $500-$1000 bill if something goes wrong. Basically the same principle as a car.

In other words, being poor is a bad reason to get a pet.

Ugghhh this. I live in the north east US and since the snow has melted I get to clean up all the dog poop that's been in my yard this winter.

They just shouldn't be any more than pets. I, in my childhood has cats mostly, and I had a boa for most of my life that I had to give to another family member when I moved out of my folks house. But they were just pets. I see it more common in dogs and their owners, using them, as replacements for some kind of human presence in their life that is absent. Seems unhealthy to me, to the person and the dogs. But that's only the anecdotal examples I've seen with my eyes.

I think I know what you mean by not using it as a human replacement, especially with dog owners. What would be an example of a pet just being a pet though...

At least once yeah. Most of the time it's that they're suprised at the number, like say for a surgical procedure, when we have documented that we provided an estimate and gone over it with them.

Like an additional member of the family. I think it's a matter of who is dependent on who. It doesn't seem healthy to be dependent on an animal for something it cannot provide by default. But when you bring an animal, domesticated or otherwise into your home, it is dependent on you as it's caregiver. And in that, can give you a sense of companionship and appreciation in return.

Never ever have indoor cats.

- You have to pay for their food / litter
- You have to constantly clean up after them
- They barf all over the damn place all of the damn time
- They claw the crap out of everything (even having the scratching post toys doesn't completely void this)
- They shed like crazy
- Unless you win the lottery, the cat won't want anything to do with you anyway

Also, dogs are loud, obnoxious, and filthy. (and often hyper-active / won't leave you alone) I hate those bastards.

Sorry you had bad experiences with cats, but other than paying for food which is universal for all pets and the shedding part, I'd don't have any of those problems with my two cats.

I'm thinking of getting a cat cause I think they seem cool and they're low maintenance. I don't think it's because of any loneliness reasons.

That's a good reason. I wasn't trying to pin my my personal observations on you. As I said, I grew up with cats in the house all through my childhood, and they are fairly low maintenance so, it's a good choice. I grew up with a lot of female cats, and only one male cat, at home. In the one rental I could have pets we (it was after I got married) had two male kittens. One with gastronomical issues with all but one brand of food we finally found, at that was like the most "high maintenance" I have ever experienced with cats.
