Example: you're getting rid of an old bicycle and put it up on craigslist for $50, and after arranging someone to come over they do a theatrical "oh my god I'm so sorry, I only have $40 on me!" routine.

Fuck this is annoying.

Had this happen a few times.

Just use the retort, " Oh no did I post it was $50? I meant $60." Then don't sell to them.

Never happened to me but if it did I'd put the merch right back in my car and dive away. Fuck playing games once the price is already settled on.

You should have taken off the front wheel before selling them 4/5 of the bike for 4/5 of the asking price.

One time this big scary homeless dude was like "hey man you got any money" and I was drunk as shit and said "sorry man I already gave away my money to a guy down the block" which was in fact true but I'm pretty sure this second homeless guy was about to rob me.

I've had people walk up to me at night asking if I had any cash they could borrow.

Like, I don't even know these people.

I'll deliberately lowball someone that is obnoxiously highballing something, but I tend to research the regular market value of the item in question, and I'll know in advance if his price is low (question the quality), on the dot (still question something), a little high (everyone needs to make a fair profit on something), or outrageous (nope.jpg)

The first time I ever went to Atlanta, this guy comes up to me on the street acting like we're friends th s t haven't seen each other in a long time. He tells me I was "always a cool dude" and asks if I have any money to give him.

I of course played along and just said "nah man sorry I just spent my last money at KFC," (I actually did have a KFC to go bag in my hand).

Thinking back on it, if I had known he wasn't gonna mug me or whatever, it would have been great fun to chuckle like it was an inside joke and talk about old times that never happened.

"You remember the last time we went to KFC and there was that chick who ordered that like 30-piece bucket for dine in? Man, she was at least as big as Elizabeth Jones, you remember her, the chick from biology class?"

How badly do you want to sell your bike? Did they drive out to meet you? What condition is the bike in?

You can tell them to screw and come back with those remaining ten, but you're risking time and money until the next guy comes along.

Basic bartering and haggling 101.

What annoys me is that I restore old arcade cabinets as a small side hobby and the truth of it is most of these things aren't worth more than a few hundred dollars, but since people think arcades are like gold because they're big and old they will price them in the thousands. When I try to give them a fair and reasonable offer (based on the game) they get mad because it's so much lower than what they're asking

But no, I've never had anyone show up short when buying something. I'd love to hear it though as there is an ATM literally 3 min from my house

This is why I tend to sell things from a sense of convenience rather than need. I didn't need that $50 at all, and I didn't need the bike gone that weekend. So if some guy wants to dick me around I can just tell him to go away. Don't like getting played with, especially over such petty amounts.

The bartering and haggling is done before the meet. Trying to get it cheaper after the fact with shady tactics such as this is no longer negotiation. It's being a cheap piece of shit.
