Those games being Atelier Ayasha: The Alchemist of Dusk and Atelier Totori: The Adventures of Arland.

First, what I know: the Atelier games are all connected by the Atelier brand and I imagine a similar artstyle and some common elements - kind of like a weebier and less awkwardly named Final Fantasy. Totori and Ayasha, for example, are not a part of the same series - they belong to the same franchise, but the setting and story is different for both games.

That's about it. And even then I could be wrong, correct me if I am.

I bought Totori first, but the local EB Games had a "buy one get one free" deal and Ayasha was the same price. Totori has cover art - I was hesitant to buy it because I've been moving away from anime, but the cover was fucking gorgeous from the font to the art itself and it was $18 for a (presumably) well put-together niche series. That's why I picked out Ayasha - I saw Atelier again, and it was the same price, which meant I got it for free. For $18, getting two full length RPGs was a steal.

So, I'm asking all of you weebs, RPG fans and general opinionated game people - did I pick up two decent Atelier games? Are they good entry points into the series?

First of all: I played the Vita version of Totori, and I don't really know how much they changed.
Haven't gotten far in Ayesha yet, so I won't comment on that.

In Totori, it's all about time and resource management. Basically, you run a workshop and have to rank up your adventurer's license by exploring, battling, and crafting items within the time limit of 3 years. You'll also build relationships with other characters by following their quest lines or bringing them into battle, and events will trigger when certain conditions are fulfilled.

If you fulfill the adventurer rank condition, you'll be able to move the main plot forward and an ending will trigger at the end of year 6 depending on the main plot's progression and character events you have seen.

Totori is a pretty good entry point for the Arland trilogy, since vanilla Rorona (first installment) is pretty unforgiving (so I've heard) and Meruru (third installment) has a good chunk of its focus on the returning characters.

I considered trying an Atelier game, but there were so many that I didn't know where to start. So, I didn't.

I did some research and apparently Ayasha had a bunch of stuff taken out and replaced with more noob-friendly functions - I'm interested in getting into the series, but would it be a better experience to start with Ayasha then play Totori after that?

I started playing Ayesha last night. The English voice acting is pretty bad and the story so far seems really vapid - kind of like a shitty anime? But synthesising stuff is fun, I'm making mad dosh from the Delivery quests and it's generally a good timesink. Also, I think I want Regina to be with Ayesha - I'm on-board with this ship about 70%.

Trade PS3 Ayesha for the Vita version because the JP voices are actually good and all scenes are voiced.

also usually the more recent atelier games are in trilogies like the 2 more recent ones (sophie and firis) are part of a trilogy so they tend ot share some characters w/ each other

Last bump - Ayesha is a good chill-out game, something simple to put on when you want to chill out, do some basic crafting and see some nice visuals.

Atelier Totori is probably the best entry point into Atelier games

I played Atelier Ayesha on Vita and I quit like halfway through.

I really just did not get the crafting system in the game and there are no good guides online. It seemed all my alchemy stuff was weak as shit and I didn't get how to make good stuff.

I think you just gotta get good ranking materials and combine it with other good ranking materials.

Of course, I imagine that the game gets to a point where you really need to play the RNG until you get what you need. I imagine really good stuff has like a 5% drop rate.

Totori is one of the more likable main characters. Unfortunately, it's one of the games that's closely linked to the others in the trilogy. You'll miss out on who a few of the characters are.

Ayesha is definitely more newb friendly. It's a very good starting point because of that and it's the first in that particular world.

Don't get too invested in the overall story. It's more about character relationships and stuff. A lot of the mysteries of the world are never actually explained. Totori does wrap things up pretty nicely though. Ayesha...not so much.

The gameplay is an acquired taste. You may or may not like it. It's kind of like Persona...only not as good.
