I avoided it for like a year because I thought the same thing.

It's a fantastic show. The way the fights take place, make the MC OP'ness work brilliantly.

The fighting isn't the point of the show.

It's obviously written in a way that MC's OP-ness contributes to the plot and sends an entirely different message from the typical shounen pattern of beating tough guys. Even his pupil who was entirely trying to figure out how Saitama got his power ultimately changes his dynamic to simply learning about how to be truly heroic when he realizes that Saitama is more of a hero than people weaker than him.

The show works because Saitama's aloof but just-hearted nature makes him the most ideal person to be over the top strong.

If you can get through the first 3 episodes, it starts getting rather interesting when the main Protagonists tries to be a register hero.

These pretty much sum it up.

Honestly, I think the best parts of the show are based around what the other heroes go through before Saitama shows up and one-punches the enemy. Although Saitama is the star, the colorful cast of characters around him (like Genos, Mumen Rider, Speed-o-Sound Sonic, etc.) are what make the show great.

I mean I wouldn't say that per se. Mob Psycho 100 (by the same author) is a contender for being one of the most well written thing ever though.

I've said before, OPM is 50% Saitama, 50% the trials of the weaker heroes. And it works well.

Basically, Mob's power is never explicitly explained, but his 100%s are based on his current emotion and doesn't always end in some giant outbursts, and there are far more moments like when Reigan received massive powers from Mob than Mob actually fighting himself. He only fights when it's necessary, and a lot of the conflicts are resolved by Mob simply convincing the other person that his way of thinking is flawed.

I dunno which moment I should spoil, but in the inevitable fight against... Dimple, his 100% outburst is based on trust. Before the outburst, Dimple gained some massive power up and tried to fight Mob until he couldn't fight anymore. But after an insult and Dimple laughing at Mob, Mob instead realizes something about Dimple that his other well-intentioned friends don't do for him. That is, Dimple is always honest with Mob, while others try to hide their true feelings to not hurt Mob's feelings. So when he reaches 100%, it actually neutralizes all the psychic powers around him, Mob tells Dimple how he feels about him, and Dimple loses his will to fight but instead makes a sacrifice to save Mob's life.

Hopefully, if OPM takes off on Netflix, they'll bring its sister series Mob Psycho 100 over as well. And hopefully that does well too so MP100 can get greenlit for a 2nd season. I really want a confirmation since I prefer it to OPM. Don't get me wrong, OPM is really good, but MP100 has a more interesting cast, has a stronger focus on character development, and they say OPM is what the author writes for fun while MP100 is his MO. And I sure as hell am not touching MP100's manga because the artstyle makes my eyes bleed. And I already have Attack on Titan to do the job.

OPM has nothing on the GL fights. The start small, and just keep getting bigger than anything you have ever see anime.
