Keyblades unlock pathways to different worlds. There was a huge war over Kingdom Hearts and the most powerful key, the x-blade. Most Keyblade wielders were killed.

Two wielders, Eraqus and Xehanort, grew up to become masters and trained three new students: Terra, Aqua, and Ventus. Xehanort plotted to discover the ancient X-Blade by manipulating the students. A battle ensued which ended in the death of Eraqus, the damnation of Aqua, Xehanort's merger with Terra (creating an almost entierly new entity), and Ventus' heart seeking refuge in a young boy named Sora.

Years later Terranort (having not retained any memories from either past life) works with a scientist named Ansem who is researching the pathways to different worlds. They discover and distrupt Kingdom Hearts, which cause a darkness to spread throughout the Multiverse. From this darkness emerge the Heartless, creatures who feed on malicious intent. As this happens, new keyblades reveal themselves to their masters, Sora and Riku. They find the keys are effective in sealing away the darkness and learn how to traverse throughout the Multiverse.

As the two new keyblade wielders (along with Mickey Mouse, Yensid, and other allies) fight to free the worlds of Heartless, they discover beings known as Nobodies. Nobodies are born when Heartless take the life (heart) of someone and their bodies become empty shells. The strongest of these empty shells form a group and are driven to find Kingdom Hearts in an attempt to become whole again. Their methods are brutal, and they do this with total disregard for the people they harm in their quest. The keyblade wielders defeat this group and lock all pathways linking the worlds together, stopping the Heartless from doing anymore harm.

After saving the multiverse, Sora and Riku continue their training to become keyblade masters. It is during this time they discover what happened to Xehanort and the other keyblade wielders of the past. During his travels, Sora sacrificed himself to save his friends causing him to lose his heart, thus forming a Nobody. However, due to Sora's powerful will, he was able to return to his human form with the help of a Princess. We learn that his Nobody was actually the keyblade wielder who found sanctuary in Sora's heart all those years ago, Ventus (who now goes by the name of Roxas due forgetting his name). Roxas, however, took a part of Sora's being/memories when he split from his heart. This meant Roxas (Ven) had to merge once more with the boy in order to make Sora whole again.

In addition to all this, Sora discovers that their actions have led to the resurrection of Xehanort who still wants the X-Blade. So now the remaining keyblade wielders have a new task: Free the keyblade warriors of the past from their suffering and stop Xehanort from ruling Kingdom Hearts.

Well, Roxas is really more Ventus's nobody than Sora's so they're basically the same guy.

Roxas is Sora's Nobody with Ven's heart shaping what he looks like.

I guess he's more like their combined Nobody, if anything, but he's still a distinct person. Same as Kairi and Namine, and Xehanort and Xemnas.

You didn't mention the unchained x events at all or even how heartless are formed. Or any of xehanorts powers involving creating heartless.

Once upon a time, there was a prophecy that these 5 dorks would fight. So those 5 dorks started fighting over whether or not they would actually fight and ended up killing everybody. But their master knew this would happen and sent a 6th dork out with his Keyblade. Xehanort gets that Keyblade a longass time later, and does some evil stuff to replicate the war those 5 dorks caused, because science or some shit.

For some reason, nobody believes he's evil even though he clearly doesn't try to hide it? Anyway, he ends up possessing some kid and continues to do bad shit in his body, like abducting people and sending old men to the Shadow Realm. In the end, he splits himself into a Heartless and a Nobody and then continues to do 2x the amount of evil shit he was doing before.

10 years later, Sora gets his own Keyblade and has to beat up his friend Riku because he's being a whiny angsty bitch, and then save his girl, and then defeat Xehanort's Heartless. Also, Donald Duck and Goofy are there because why not? Sora ends up in some castle run by Hot Topic employees and loses his powers. He wakes up and defeats Xehanort's Nobody, but then has to lose his powers again because he didn't save the world properly? So he takes this test to get his powers back, but just ends up once again losing his powers. Meanwhile, Riku becomes Shoku Warrior even though Omi was way more qualified, and Yen Sid told Mickey to not tell anybody that Aqua's been starving to death in darkness for 13 years.

Also Xehanort invented time-travel and now there's 13 of him. Which is exactly how many more years we have until KH3 actually comes out.
