I used to feel this way but honestly, technology has advanced so much that 95% of the arguments in favour of standard transmission are obsolete. They're no longer more fuel efficient, safer, give you more control or are more accessible - unless you are doing something wild like 4x4 driving over hilly sand dunes in the desert or something.

Sure there are:

- less effort
- probably *more* fuel efficient now
- easier and more accessible
- smoother ride

That's plenty of reason.

Cheaper to buy
Cheaper to maintain(no Transmission fluid, if an automatic transmission breaks, it is thousands of dollars to fix, and it wont ever run right again)
Better gas mileage
Faster than automatics(standards are direct drive, automatics use ATF to drive them, there is always fluid slippage, so they don't work as efficiently )

Lol at driving a standard. It is called technology improvement and if you think that somehow affects how you grow up then you might as well drive a carriage pulled by horses as driving a standard is cheating according to you logic.

TC is being obtuse but there are some genuine benefits with driving a standard. Cheaper servicing costs (or the ability to DIY if you're that way inclined), more control (useful in certain environments), more fun (a legitimate reason why a lot of people like to drive), generally more direct engine-to-driver feel, rather than the typical lag or obvious bottlenecked feel that a lot of auto transmissions have.

Well yes, of course. Ultimately it comes down to what you want out of life. 4x4 driving with an automatic is a miserable experience, a bit like planning a camping trip and staying at a resort hotel after the hike up the mountain - if you do this you've missed the point of the entire thing. Obviously, a hotel is better than a tent, but that's not why people do it.

Different cultures? I know some people that havent even heard of an automatic transmission outside of USA.

I would LOVE to learn to drive a manual, but never really had the resources just yet. They sound and make the drive look cooler. But Automatics surpass standards nowadays, they are much more efficient for the job. I do have to agree that manuals may prevent texting and driving.

Automatics only for kids? pfft, elitist

More than likely the TC knows how to drive a manual and knows that many do not or don't have the means, ability or interest in driving one.

Anyway a real man drives what he likes or whats available to him at the moment, not what he assumes other people wanting him to drive.

It's either that or go kicking it.

Fuel economy is pretty much no longer a point to argue.

HOWEVER;

Maintenance is cheaper, by a long shot. Manuals have fewer 'wear' parts, and have no 'filters' and lesser fluid for a change (my automatic costs around $60 a change; whereas my manual costs $30 with high end fluid; not counting labour... labour is higher on an automatic change). No need for coolers, and there is no need to ever worry about overheating a manual. No need to worry about a transmission line leaking as there are none on manuals. Manuals are lighter, so they do technically make a very SLIGHT difference in performance and MPG, but not enough to notice.

Typically, if a manual fails, you are still drive the car. An automatic fails means you are stuck where you are. The most common failures on a manual are the clutch and hydraulics (all of which are way cheaper than pretty much anything on an automatic).

Then of course, you have the ability to control torque output as needed. You can mechanically separate the engine and drivetrain with the clutch, and you can downshift if needed.

I have an automatic and a manual... I like both vehicles but I have a real hard time with the automatic one. I am constantly worried about the fluid and temp of it (and the normal slippage between shifts that plague stock automatics). I am actually considering doing a manual transmission swap... but its not that easy on this model. Very few were manual; so I would need to do some fab work.

I for one am really greatful for Automatic cars. I have really bad knees and if I had to use a clutch it would cause even worse problems for me.

But by all means make a sweeping statement that appeals to what ever it is your trying to prove.
