For a while, they were selling premium phones, and I always thought what they brought to the table was always better than Apple or Samsung or LG. Even the new Xperia XZ Premium seems better. The biggest negative I would say is it's design. Top of the line camera, and media features. And the best waterproof phone out there. Is it just bad marketing? Or are the phones really not that good? I had a Z5 and thought it was awesome, especially the ability to Remote Play.

Samsung got them sweet deals with the service providers

I think after Sony acquired Ericsson's share in their joint venture it all sort of went downhill for them.

that said they're just whatever as laptops, not worse than any of the other brands

I'd say they're on par with dell, but better than toshiba and hp. Asus, Lenovo, MSI are far better.

The Z3 was good. I had it and like the design. The Sony phones after that were undermarketed in the US, plus they were too expensive for their hardware

The Xperia Z3 was the best phone of 2014. By a huge margin, too. It had unbelievable battery life, amazing specs, was the only waterproof flagship phone and had a great camera.

The problem is that Sony's marketing was totally garbage.

Let me know when sony makes another of those xperia play phones with the slideout gamepad or makes one with a stylus and no screen bezels
