Who remembers Harold?

I grew up in South Eastern Pennsylvania. I lived in a small, but historic town right next to amish country in Lancaster. The house I lived in was built in 1910 on the foundation of land that was purchased in the early 1820's. The original basement of the first home on that property remained, and the newer house was built on top of that. In the basement of our home was a mine entrance that has been confirmed as part of the original Underground Railroad, and provided a route that assisted in bringing slaves further North. It went nearly a half mile deep until it reached an apparent cave in, entirely blocked out with dirt and rock.

All of my life, I witnessed lights, heard voices, knocks, clanking of metal, splintering of wood, humming, and light singing within the cavern. I would sit there for hours and experience things nearly daily, would bring and terrify friends down there in what was seemingly harmless but shockingly common for noises coming from a cavern of dirt and rock.

My closest neighbor was nearly 2 miles away, there was one single road in front of our house, that extended across our driveway that was 400 yards in the opposite direction of the underground cavern and route. Noise pollution, outside sound, cars, other people, were entirely ruled out because there was virtually nothing but nature above the ground of the tunnel system.

It seemed to be nothing intelligent, at times it was patterns, precise enough to the point to when I heard two clanks, I anticipated the humming voice within a minute of those noises and predicted correctly more often than not. It was like a recording, replaying over and over in time, sometimes synchronized. Nothing ever spoke to me, seemed to reach out, or offer anything to expect it was nothing more than an imprint in time.

It never explained the lights, sometimes like a pop of a low watt lightbulb popping as soon as you turn it on, to at times a flash that grew and subsided over a few seconds. There were those that appeared very flashlight-like, a light growing across a wall and then retreating as if it were a miner's light. There was one way in and one way out of the tunnel, and I investigated frequently to find virtually nothing that could create a light source.

I'd chalk it up to hundreds of experiences in this home in the basement, my entire family has seen it and accepted it as common knowledge about the basement and left as an unexplained phenomenon that, well, we can't explain. My parents still live in the home, I left shortly after I turned 18.
