Even if it's not the best, which Sonic game was your favorite?

For me it's 3&K, but CD comes really close.

3&K > CD > 1 > 2

S3&K had too many shitty levels. Sonic 2 was at least consistent in level quality and didn't feel like it ran on too long.

Neither it nor 1 were great but 2 at least felt like it understood itself, despite a few hiccups like the levers you had to pull in that one stage.

But at least it wasn't like 1 where unforseeable springs would send you running the other direction, the ground would just suddenly end and throw you onto spikes and you had literal (literally literal) slow-ass block riding segments and a vertical climbing boss. It's like they decided after making the first few levels they needed a gimmick so they just increased the max speed four times and only made a few minor adjustments.

Sonic 2 was amazing. Such fantastic levels, with plenty of exploring and alternate routes, and stunning graphics for the time. Highlights were EHZ, ARZ, and CNZ. The only thing I really disliked were all those short zones at the end, which weren't even that well designed (although the battle against the final boss was great).

I must admit, S&K had (relatively) weak level design. It was still good, since it was Sonic, but stuff like Sandopolis and Death Egg were pretty meh. Not on the same level as Casino Night Zone or something.

Sonic 3&K all day every day.

Glad to see that CD is near last. Visually and in terms audio it's the best. But the gameplay is easily the worst. I liked what they were trying to do, but execution wise it was very weak. Level design did not lend itself to exploration to find the time post (and that's not even mentioning how bad some of the level design can get. Wacky Workbence, anyone?). Past posts were few and far between and getting to them usually meant backtracking which again, the levels were not suited to do well. Once you find one and activate it, now you have to find the one good spot to build speed up in order to warp. Better watch out for an enemy, hazard, or even a wall because if you stop for a second you lose the opportunity to go back to the past, Jack.

"But the Super-Peel out!" Ah yes, the move that's less useful than the spindash (which was nerfed), because it doesn't protect you from enemies and controlling it sucked as well. Speaking of, what did they do to the Spindash? Yeah sure the upgraded ports fixed it, but seriously it was really bad. CD itself, is flawed. The game isn't the worst, but it isn't nearly as good as people make it out to be.

I'm probably skewed toward Sonic CD because it's the only one I've played remade. If I had played Sonic 1 & 2 in widescreen with modern save systems I imagine I'd like them a lot more than I do.

3&k, no fucking contest
sonic 1 only really bothered me with spring yard and parts of marble, but sonic 2 had metropolis, parts of aquatic ruin, oil ocean, casino night, and hill top as levels i didn't like
the only levels in 3&k i didn't like is probably marble garden just because the spinning top is a drag, and maybe carnival night if i'm playing impatiently, and the rising sand segments sucked
cd is just not fun at all

Basically, it wins by default because it doesn't have as many bullshit parts as the other games. As even you pointed out, Marble Garden, Carnival Night, and Sandopolis were fucking annoying. S3&K might have had a few of the best levels, but it also had a good chunk of really bad ones; hence S2 having "consistent level design."

3&K, definitely.

2 suffers from the fact that after Casino Night, there's nothing noteworthy to perk you up until you reach Metropolis's high difficulty.

3 whole zones of mediocrity, in succession. Blegh.

In contrast, 3&K never had whole zones be throwaways like that, though it did have a few bad individual acts.

it's fun the first time but the platforming is so simple and everything repeats so much that it quickly loses its charm
