Is it hottt??? The idea, that is. Good idea?

I feel like this is an extremely bad idea.

"In Japan we have some volcanoes, earthquakes and such kind of natural hazards. People (want to create) some monitoring or analysis equipment but we don't know ... what kind of factor to use," Abe said.
"So we need to know the natural system more clearly or precisely ... we have to observe the earth more precisely."

Seems pretty reasonable to me

I think it's kinda crazy how they're planning to start 2030 at the latest. Just feels weird the sort of massive timescales these sorts of projects are on

They'll get about 20 miles down and realize that it's hard as fuck and not cost efficient.

They only need to drill like 4 miles to reach the mantle <_<

Also it seems strange to say it's not cost efficient since it's not like there are any other alternatives that get the same result. It costs however much it costs. Cost efficiency is something you worry about when comparing multiple options

They can't, the Russians already tried similar things, the drills break up and are met with failure going past a certain distance.

that's why they're probably not starting for another 10 years

says in the article that there's still some improvements in technology that need to be made before it's even possible

The pressure will be enormous. The upper mantle is largely solid because of that, despite being hot enough to be molten otherwise.

The world will change so much by then. They'll probably forget about the project in all that time.

The drill needs to pierce the heavens first, that way it can pierce the mantle without hopefully melting

Technology can always improve, but a lot of technology is also held down and prevented from ever making it into the assembly line because of a lot of red tape and legalities.

Beyond 2000 was a very popular tech and science show during the 80s, and they featured amazing things there that were already in work, and in the process of being constructed, but they never got made use of due to a lot of things.

Of course I'm not an expert in this field but it just sounds, from an uneducated perspective, like a dangerous idea. The mantle has never been penetrated before--we literally no idea what could happen.

well, the same can be said of basically any new experiment or discovery.

I'm not super educated on the subject either but just consider the size of the earth and the mantle to the size of the hole that would be drilled in it. I can't imagine it making any sort of significant impact in terms of like, earthquakes or whatever

I, for one, think it's a brilliant idea.

Think of the things that could be learned, and could be applied for safety measures against volcanoes, earthquakes and such. Literally a plan with no drawbacks, bar possibly the monetary cost.
