Ardian Syaf is an Indonesian comic book artist that works for several American comic publishers. He's deliberately inserting subliminal messages about conservative Islamic political movement in 2017 Jakarta Election in Marvel's comics. One of the messages written is "QS 5:51". It is a Quranic verse which states that "Muslims should not take the Jews and Christians as their allies/friends". Indonesian translation of the verse states that "Muslims should not appoint the Jews and Christians as their leader", thus the Quranic verse is being used by Islamists to prevent the reelection of a Christian governor of Jakarta. Another subliminal message is "212". It refers to the mass protest by Islamists in Jakarta that took place on December 2nd, 2016. Hence the "212". The protesters demanded the prosecution of the Christian Governor for allegedly committing "blasphemy" towards the Quran.

It's pretty standard for a company to apologise on behalf of serious misdeeds done by employees. If I went and sabotaged a bunch of client projects you can bet your ass my CEO would be apologising to them in person the next day, after firing me of course. It's not about fault, it's about taking responsibility.

Artist Adrian Syaf has returned to social media following a brief hiatus after his hidden political and religious messages in this month's X-Men: Gold #1 were exposed. In a post on his Facebook page, the Indonesian artist has said "my career is over now."

Here is his statement:

Hello, World...

My career is over now.
It's the consequence what I did, and I take it.
Please no more mockery, debat, no more hate. I hope all in peace.

In this last chance, I want to tell you the true meaning of the numbers, 212 and QS 5:51.

It is number of JUSTICE. It is number of LOVE. My love to Holy Qur'an...my love to the last prophet, the Messenger...my love to ALLAH, The One God.

My apologize for all the noise. Good bye, May God bless you all. I love all of you.

Syaf doesn't explain if his statement of his career being "over now" is of his own personal choice or through some third-party informing him so. Marvel had previously released a statement saying that "disciplinary action" would be taken with Syaf, but the extent of it was not revealed. Syaf is solicited to draw X-Men Gold #2 through #4, and the publisher has not announced any changes to those plans as of yet.

Syaf had previously worked for Dynamite Entertainment, Dabel Bros., Panini, and DC Comics - the latter of which he had an exclusive with from 2009 to 2016.

Now this is particularly fucked up.

You hear people complain about politics or propaganda in comics when it comes to Ms. Marvel or the new Iron Man, but this is a dude literally putting subliminal messages in media to further segregate Islam from other Abrahamic religions and to trigger a negative reaction towards the current Indonesian government. That's a particularly messed up political agenda - actual politics, mind you, not social politics.

I hope this guy gets a talking to. Let him do what he loves, but I don't think he should be propagating messages like this through a mainstream, universally recognized brand like the X-Men. If nothing else, watch this dude like a hawk - ideally though, get him off X-Men for pulling this shit and get him working on something less public.

Edit: just read the last post. Marvel took action, and I'm glad that this junk has been sorted out.

Marvel Comics has officially terminated the contract of Ardian Syaf, "effectively immediately." The termination follows controversy surrounding Syaf's artwork in X-Men Gold #1.

Syaf's art will still be featured in X-Men Gold #2 and X-Men Gold #3, as it is too late to alter these upcoming issues of the bi-weekly series. RB Silva will provide art for X-Men Gold #4, which was originally solicited as being drawn by Syaf. Silva will also illustrate X-Men Gold #5 and #6. Ken Lashley will draw X-Men Gold #7-9.

Marvel has also stated that they will announce a replacement for Syaf as X-Men Gold's lead artist in the near future.
