That honestly really depends on what you're expecting out of a jRPG. Modern Persona games are kind of slice-of-life anime style with supernatural elements thrown in. Death, the cycle of life, and God are fairly prominent themes in the games.

The games are traditionally turn-based, with some unique and quirky mechanics thrown in for good measure. If you're intrigued by the games, then I recommend you spend the 12 or so dollars on PSN to get Persona 3 FES. The games are fairly similar mechanically, so except for minor changes, the gameplay will be relatively the same.

As much as i love persona 3 fes the game is outdated enough that it could push someone away from persona 5

start with persona 4 at least (or at least persona 3 portable with updated combat mechanics) but honestly i'd recommend going with persona 5 first

none of the stories continue, and persona 5 is far more refined than the rest of the series
