I don't understand where peanut allergies came from. Never heard of them until I was in college, when suddenly kids started getting rushed to the ER because a teacher ate peanits and then spoke to the class and her breath caused a reaction.

Short answer: kids with peanut allergies died as infants and we called it "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome" cause we had no idea what was causing it (peanut isn't the only offender of this, but it's one of the biggest ones). --- ... Kids used to be exposed to peanuts early on. They built up immunity to them. Peanut allergies just plain didn't exist. Then one kid who never touched a peanut in his childhood touched one and ended up dying, overbearing parents prevented their kids from coming into contact with peanuts, and the allergy spread
