Uh, the UFC always lets fighters re-try their weight cut unless they aren't medically cleared to do so
The issue is that different states have different regulations around weight-cutting. I don't think the UFC internal weight cutting rules talk directly about how many times you can try to weigh in. But NY does, and CA does. They just happen to be different rules: http://www.mmafighting.com/2016/6/2/11827266/different-weigh-in-procedure-for-ufc-199-explained but yeah that towel grabbing is pretty blatant. --- He would make his mark, if not on this tree, then on that wall; if not with teeth and claws, then with penknife and razor. ... I mean, I can confirm that it's very, very easy to add 1-2 pounds in a few minutes. Not unlikely that he can shed them in the same time. It's not impossible at all, but considering the requirements they put around weight cutting in the UFC now its much less likely than it used to be. They've implemented pre-weigh in weight caps (no more than 8% off weight a week out from the fight) and banned post-weigh in IVs. Cormier is a guy who has always had problems with cutting weight (missed the olympics cuz he was too fat, and that was at a higher weight class). So Idk. --- He would make his mark, if not on this tree, then on that wall; if not with teeth and claws, then with penknife and razor. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I watch the UFC pretty closely, or at least I used to, and I've never seen a rule that a fighter can only weigh in once and if they miss weight they're screwed. MMA was only legalized in NY like last year so I suspect this is more about NY than the UFC or MMA --- He would make his mark, if not on this tree, then on that wall; if not with teeth and claws, then with penknife and razor. ... How much weight can leaning on a towel take off realistically? a lot I would think, potentially at least a pound I mean, what he's basically doing is shifting his weight from being on the scales to being on the ground by channeling the force through the towel, into those guys who are holding it, and down to their feet. They're partially holding him up, if you assume he's actually leaning on the towel and not just grabbing it tightly --- He would make his mark, if not on this tree, then on that wall; if not with teeth and claws, then with penknife and razor. ...
