To be fair I don't think it was that many tomahawks. Nowadays I think those are typically launched from sea vessels. Those stupid little 500 pounders that get dropped at only like 2 grand a piece. I'd have to see how much the guided ones cost but I don't imagine they're more than like 50 grand.

Edit: so a JDAM, which I remember is using in Iraq, is apparently only about 25k per unit

Also since the media uses the term 'air strike' as an umbrella term it's hard to interpret what actually happened.

The missiles we dropped before weren't 57 motherfucking tomahawks at once, aimed at a military instilation of a government we weren't even (technically) at war with. The missile strikes last year were targeted primarily at ISIS.

Furthermore, he did it without congressional approval, and he announced it after he did it. These are things a dictator does.

Ya, democratically elected dictator

You realize a LOT of dictators start out democratically elected, right? Adolf Hitler, Robert Mugabe, and Ferdinand Marcos were all democratically elected, and not in sham elections either. The majority of their countries made the decision to vote for them (ironically the biggest difference between their rise to power and Trump's).

How someone comes into power does not have any bearing on whether or not they will be a dictator. I'm pretty certain Germans said that Hitler wasn;t a dictator because he was democratically elected as well, right before giving a Sieg Heil.

I don;t think you have a great grasp on modern weapons.

The fact that they were tomohawks does matter. Certain types of missiles are, in fact, easier to direct where they will wind up exploding, as well as containing the destruction to what you want exploded. Tomahawks are for when you don;t care what blows up, you just want to blow shit up. Plus, while it is not as important, Tomohawks are LUDICROUSLY expensive. That's why we don't use them very often.

You're right, they weren't all shot at ISIS, but they were all shot at terrorist cells. We have never attacked the Syrian government directly before now.

Actually, yes, he did, by precedent. Congress had already approved acts of aggression against the terrorist organizations targetted. They have never approved attacks on the Syrian government because attacking Assad directly is just asking for WWIII.

There are Russian military personnel stationed at those bases, working alongside Assad's forces. Them getting killed in the strikes, and Putin getting pissed off about it, is what the concern is about.

Those people were right-ish. It's a very gray area, but he managed to remain juuuust on the legal side of things. Honestly, do you really think if Obama violated the constitution the republicans wouldn;t have jumped on the chance to impeach him? Not defending Obama for using it, but to say he did something illegal isn't technically accurate. Plus, to get congressional approval we would have to declare war, which would require acknowledging ISIS as a sovereign nation. No one wants that. Well, except ISIS.

We already did the diplomatic thing. Assad was told to turn over all chemical weapons after the last time he gassed a town, which he claimed he did. Then he gassed a town again, and claimed it couldn't be his forces because he got rid of his weapons, so the rebels had to have done it. He's also been using chlorine gas for a while.

How many times will you insist on the "diplomatic thing" before you realize Assad doesn't give a shit about anything besides maintaining control of Syria? The only way to keep someone like him in line is to threaten that control. And the only way to do that with him is to take away the means by which he maintains that control, which he will never give up willingly.

Actually, most of our efforts in the region were aimed at toppling Assad which included arming rebels who used their weapons directly against Assad's forces. Those weapons generally weren't going "to fight terror" and, in many cases, ended up in the hands of ISIS affiliates who were also against the Syrian government.

Plus, for bombings not aimed at attacking the Assad regime, a "surprising" number of attacks hit Assad's forces.

Supposedly Hitler wasn't actually elected when he first got in. A professor gave me some long explanation about a coalition government or something. But whatever, let's just say he was elected because Chavez was also elected and that guy was a monstrous dictator as well. As for Trump being a dictator, he hasn't even done a fraction of the stuff Obama did (although he might, because each president is an extension of the previous one) and you never called Obama a dictator.

Geez some of the ignorance in this thread. If you do not know anything regarding a topic then why even comment? Ridiculous. I'm only speaking of a few posters, but the one that finally made me post was the one that said we should "sanely" find a diplomatic solution to Assad.......you know, the guy that uses chemical weapons against his own people........because that's sane right?

So glad we attacked. Many ignorant people don't even know that Syria has been home to genocide for a very long time. America is great, but it really blows that the ignorant, uneducated, and often delusional commoners all get to speak their minds recklessly on topics they probably have never encountered, researched or even heard of.
