alright, suppose:

The Electoral College is done away with because it is "undemocratic". Popular vote becomes the order of the day.

As a result, only New York and California matter anymore. As you might guess, the Republican party is doomed and will never again win a presidential election. The Democrat party will win every election until the end of time... or will they?

The Democrats won the war, right? No more oppression, right? Social justice for all, RIGHT!? The 60's hippie dream come true?? Uh, don't pop the corks off your champagne bottles just yet guys! Cuz your problems aren't quite over yet!

"If you can't beat them, join them!" the doomed Republicans then realize! Hell, Trump himself was a Democrat once! Once the Republicans all turn coat and profess their loyalty to the Democrats, they can corrupt, mutate and warp the Democrat party from the inside out!. These new "Democrats" climb the ranks of the DNC and sabotage it in every possible way! Soon, it will no longer be the Democrat party as you knew it! It will no longer be the party of social justice, peace and liberalism. It will become a weird Frankenstein monster or chimera of Republican and Democrat values stitched together haphazardly! Just because the conservatives' party is destroyed doesn't mean their conservativism is destroyed! It merely means their home is gone and they are moving to yours as a result!

What then? Break the Democrat party into two or three different new parties? One of those parties will simply be the Republican party with a new name and a new coat of paint!

TLDR: The destruction of the Republican party would not be a victory for the Democrats. It will be a whole new problem in fact.

Why do people keep spreading this lie?

California has 12% of the population. New York has about half that. Even if each and every person in those two states voted for the same person, they wouldn't decide an election, you'd have to get the rest of the country on board. Plus, that 12% is the total population, including non voters and children.

Plus, I have no clue why people keep defaulting to those two, seeing as Florida and Texas both have a higher population than New York.

You're assuming that everyone in California / New York will vote Democrat, which is wrong. California only generated 2 million more democratic votes than republican votes. That's not a huge margin in the grand scheme of things when you consider we had well over 150 million voters. It's a huge enough margin that Republicans will never win California as an electorate (barring some kind of major culture shift), but it's not enough to decide the election. It's not even remotely close enough to decide the election.

The Democrats have only regularly won those states since the 90s.

A Republican Party forced to campaign in New York and California will not just say "oh well, we can't win." They will change their politics in an effort to change the result.

Also, your hypothetical makes the odd assumption that conservatives, incapable of winning a popular vote among the nation's populace, will be able to win power in a party consisting mainly of liberals.

Also of the two Parties, the Democrats are most likely to collapse. Other than Trump, and only because he is absurd, the GOP is largely aligned in their interests.
