Why oh why do we teach out kids and teenagers to write the most boring shit and (mis)use words they don't understand?

It blew my damn mind in college when I had to peer review two kids papers and they were just garbage.

Well ten years have passed since then, but any paper that substitutes "one" for the general "you" needs to just be thrown in the trash. If you say "it is" instead of "it's" (unless for emphasis), that just makes it clear that you're trying to polish a turd.

The one thing I do specifically remember blowing my mind was that both kids made the same "correction" to my paper when I talked about respect being due certain people, they both inserted a "to" after "due."

Holy damn.

The worst thing that preprofessional writing has done to me is punish conciseness and clarity with page minimums.

Yeah, this has always been a challenge for me because I'm a pretty concise fella. I just feel dirty after I spew enough garbage to hit my page limit.
