I just saw the news and they pointed out the Syria chemical attack killed people inluding women and children. Now the reason this was traditionally pointed out was that it was always considered particularly uncivilized to attack women and children as they are weak and incapable of defending themselves against men, they are non combatants . Also the decision to fight or go to war was made by men and so it was men's burden to deal with the consequences, not women and children. Fast forward to the year 2017 we treat women as equals, they participate in government and hence the decision to make war, and are allowed to fight. What TC is pointing out, however, is something a bit different. Hurting female and child civilians is considered "worse" than males. He is arguing, at least for women, this is not fair, if we consider women to be equal to men. We consider them either weaker or more valuable (and obviously its weaker) and so this is reported in order to make an attack seem more "evil", when in fact it would be equally bad if it were all males.
