Black girl accepted to 8 Ivy League schools. Affirmative Action or brilliance?

A New Jersey African-American teen girl has been accepted to all 8 Ivy League schools. And she has to make her decision soon, deciding which one to attend in the Fall.

CNN goes on to mention others who have overcame the enormous feat of being accepted into all 8 schools----

Students getting into all of the Ivies is a monumental feat, but it's happened to a handful of teens over the past couple of years -- Kwasi Enin in 2014, Harold Ekeh in 2015 and Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna and Kelly Hyles last year.

All of the people mentioned are persons of color, specifically what appears to be African American.

Are American higher education institutions tapping into previously undiscovered brilliance? Or is this a result of Affirmative Action?

Lol @ racists who voted affirmative action. Have you accomplished half of what she's accomplished?

Sure, but I am sure there is a white person that has done the same.

It depends.

She probably went to school with high grade inflation (you know those schools where it's low gpa to have a 3.0).

If she had a good SAT score than she is smart, otherwise she's just gonna be your typical switch from bio-->psychology-->History chick you find in college because she was not prepare by her poor high school.

or she is just gonna start off on history/music/art majors altogether

I assume most of them are immigrants? or 2nd generation? Its not untapped potential seeping out. Its not really any different than say Asians getting into Ivy league schools in mass numbers. This is why people against immigration are so wrong. They do much better than the native born population.

In theory, but it's always a numbers game for each one. You could get into the hardest to get into one but the lower ones might have more applicants that year and you get bumped off their acceptance list because the lower one had a higher turnout rate given it's in theory easier to get into.

Basically, competitiveness versus prestige plus costs factor in heavily to plenty of decisions by students to apply.

How come there aren't any Asians in the article being accepted into all 8 Ivies? How come no Latinos? How come not even one white person? Interesting to ponder, that's why there's a poll.

I mean it's probably a combination of both. I need to see what her SAT scores were though.

If they were 2400 or whatever is perfect score these days, then it would make sense.

I feel like many people don't fully understand Affirmative Action either. Affirmative Action gives incentives to create a diversity. It's still not going to get a school to accept someone below their standards just because they are a certain race.

And by combination I mean a combo of her merits and her race.
I'm not sure if race quotas are legal, but they obviously still do them if you look at admittance scores/GPA of various races for every school.

She probably was the most impressive or one of the most impressive black applicants which is a feat in itself, but I think colleges compare applicants more with peers of their race than other people and there are stats to prove that I think

They're not. AA allows race to be considered as a factor of admission, but not a sole determinant. What generally happens with AA is that there's a pool of equally qualified applicants, and race can essentially be used as a tiebreaker in an effort to create diversity.

Remember, these elite schools basically only care about their rankings and prestige. They aren't going to admit people with lower than average SAT, because that would lower their overall average and make them look worse. The people getting in still have top scores.

You know, I always think to stories like this and think how it unfair it would be to someone whose merits really had nothing to do with race.

Like hypothetically, let's say she still would have gotten into all 8 schools if she was Asian, that there would always be someone doubting it regardless

and I think how unfair it is with how merit is no longer valued to those who actually have merit of all races

but then I think, yeah I mean statistically it probably played a factor and how bad can I even feel for someone who got into 8 ivy league schools lmfao

If we don't have any examples of a white or asian kid, who isn't rich or connected, achieving the same it's probably affirmative action.

No, you can't. Every individual who's made it into all eight Ivy Leagues has been a minority.

False bullshit. You're attacking a strawman argument.

It was asked that if affirmative action isn't the likely cause, why exactly are all of the people accepted into all eight Ivy Leagues direct descendants of immigrant parents. You have no answer to this, so now you're making up nonsense.

You can live in feels land all you want, but everyone else isn't obligated to be braindead with regards to recognizing trends. And doing so doesn't make them a bigot. Baseless slander is no substitute for an argument.
